I'm a writer and devout horror movie fanatic. I am also African-American. Loving horror movies and being black is often a really conflicted experience.
racial stereotypes
I've watched just about every horror movie in existence (much to my wife's chagrin), and have noticed the frequent marginalization, reliance on racial stereotypes, and the often inevitable, early death of the token black character. Not so different than the portrayal of minorities in mainstream tv and film, but in horror movies, the situation is, excuse the pun, brutal,

So, from this conflicted, African-American vantage point, I've compiled the largest , most thorough reference on the web, about the portrayals of blacks in horror movies and the black actors who play them, often unsung character actors.

From Voodoo films to Blaxploitation, black portrayals in horror films have morphed and evolved. More recently, there have been small advances in the landscape, with the advent of the urban horror subgenre in the 90s, precipitated by famous rappers playing lead characters who get the benefit of surviving the entire film. This increased variety within the black horror movie landscape has created at least a little bit of suspense in the question of “will they, or won't they” make it to the end of the film.
