[EDIT] So that I realize that there are still some people that are still following along my writing - Maker knows why - I feel the need to explain why I’ve been so silent, as my thanks for still sticking to my story for so long. The disaster after disaster that’s been my life. Last year, I had decided to keep the story going despite losing all my beta readers. The quality of the story was sure to drop, but I didn’t want to give up on my lovely OCs. I knew it’d be slow, I knew it’d worsen, but I didn’t want to stop. I wanted to improve my story I started to write on a whim - Second Chance for Him, so I scrapped it and wrote it again. I built up a few chapters in storage, in case of some emergency so I could keep a slow but steady update schedule. The very next day, I got a call from my sister. My mother had a stroke. It turns out she had a bleed in her brain - and a huge one too. We had found her six hours after the bleed had started. The bleed was massive. A fraction of what she bled, and others have been paralyzed completely for life or worse. It was chaos, but she survived the surgery. I lived in the hospital with her for nearly two months, taking care of her. Thankfully, miraculously, she recovered at an incredible speed. She was discharged, and I could finally return home from the hospital with her. But the medical bills, insurance, household management, monthly bills, mother’s job… it all had to be dealt with, and as the next eldest in family I had to deal with it rather I was up for the job or not. I managed - not without a share of trouble, but I managed and the family survived the medical bills. Along side all this, I was in my last year of my college, preparing for graduation. And working part time at two separate jobs, dealing with management issues. It was a busy 6 months, and I didn’t really have time to attend to my two lonely OCs sadly forgotten by most. Eventually mother returned to work, and I had more breathing room. I found a new part time job, the most expensive restaurant in town opening up in few months. Graduation was within sight. I finally had a moment to relax. For my last quarter at college, all my finals were scheduled a week before finals week. I grumbled, but what choice did I have? I missed two weeks of training at my new job as I studied for my exams, and I finished all my finals before the finals week, and on Friday of the last day of school instruction I finished my exam and went to my part time job, as happy as I could be. I hadn’t slept the night before, up all night studying, but hey, I was free! At work, I got a call from my sister again. This time, my grandfather had passed away. I told my boss and hurried home. Mother came home crying from her work, crying, crying, crying. I purchased the tickets for airplanes, and packed bags all night. Not even 12 hours later, we were on a plane bound for Korea. The funerals are 3 days long in Korea. We missed the first day, but made it regardless. Keeping vigil at funeral, I stayed up two more night in a row. By the time we escorted my grandfather’s remains for cremation, I’d been up for nearly 100 hours with a few winks of sleep. My mother had already cried and fainted, and me and my sister were both worried sick what effect it had on her still-healing brain. After a week in Korea, we returned to America. I’d missed three weeks of training at my new job, and when I went in the day after returning, it was the last day of training. But I’m a very quick learner, and I’d no trouble with work. I was actually better than most at it, and I thought things would turn out okay. The new restaurant was attracting all the important people - Bill Gates of Microsoft, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, etc. - and the paycheck was decent. When they paid us. They made mistakes often, and didn’t pay what was due for weeks. They forgot, and we had to fight for our money tooth and nail, but even then I still didn’t get all the money I worked for. I stuck with it though, thinking that it was just part of opening a new large restaurant. It had to get better. It got worse. The restaurant that was supposed to have 6 managers, got down to two. And one of the remaining two - was a man who’d been fired from his last job in Las Vegas for sexually harassing female servers and hosts. His habit didn’t die out. He was touching me and my coworkers, using sexually degrading words to call us, never our names, despite having been asked multiple times to stop. He made sexual jokes and made the workplace hostile and unsafe. One woman got physically pushed into a closet area during work hours for telling him “don’t touch me!” as she had had attitude. At this point, simply standing next to him was making me sick to the stomach, and I could not focus on my job. I tried writing to the owners. We got a “oh sorry. It’s a cultural misunderstanding. It won’t happen again.” Last I checked, French people were much better mannered than that. Cultural misunderstanding, ha! This was when I got a message from my aunt (father’s sister) whom I hadn’t talked to in 7 years. She texted me one night while I was at work, and surprised, I checked the messages. My father had gone missing in Korea. She was asking me if she’d seen her brother, because she couldn’t get into contact with him for 4 months. Eventually, we reported him for missing persons to the police. The police said they’d look, but without my father’s permission they couldn’t tell us anything due to privacy reasons. I still don’t know if my father’s alive, though it’s been a few months. Meanwhile, I could no longer take the sexually harassing bastard at work and quit my job. That was the end of that. I didn’t have school to go to, and I had just quit my job. For first time in a while, I had nothing that needed to be done. And that’s when I realized, that it’d been a year, since my mother had brain hemorrhage. So I went and checked in on my OCs, and to my surprise found a few comments asking after the story on AO3 and fanfiction and still one Patron on my support site despite my months-long absence online. With nothing to do, I took up writing again. It was the least I could do for people that had waited for me through the long silence, for that one patron that supported me despite my not having said one word about why. I’m now dog sitting part time, working maybe 5 hours a week. It’s very little money, not enough to get by, and I’d blown all my saved money trying to get my family through my mom’s sickness and in Korea, that honestly I can’t not work anymore. I’m looking for a job, hopefully I can find one soon. A proper one. But I have time to rest, to write now, and to say my thanks to those who’ve supported me, and told me they want to hear more from my story. And to my lovely tumblr mutuals who haven’t forgotten me despite the long silence. And that one patron on my support site that never gave up on me. With my job search, I probably won’t have time to write much, but I’ll try to write as much as I can before my real life starts kicking me in my stomach again (because knowing my luck, it will soon). So… thank you, is what this boils down to. Thank you. |
