Captain John De Maio began fishing in early grade school. In 1954, while still in high school, he packed a picnic basket with a few summer clothes and hitched his way from New York City to Montauk. Within a day John had a job working the deck of a head boat as a mate. His love for fishing and Montauk was in his blood. Although various interests led him down other avenues, his heart was always fishing Montauk. In 1970 he began fishing full time. By 1972 he began his career as a charter boat captain. Besides his ability to catch fish, John discovered a talent for writing. Many magazine articles later, the Captain wrote a book "Fishing with the Bucktail" which was considered by many to be as the text on the subject. He has also lectured at many private fishing clubs. In addition, he has been a field tester for Abu-Garcia and presently a field tester for Penn Fishing Tackle. Among the various fishing lures, Captain De Maio developed a jig that was worthy of being picked up by a tackle manufacturer and sold to retail stores. Captain De Maio is a tough competitor who does not like coming in second. As he has stated: "The man who works hardest catches the most fish". His well-earned reputation for catching striped bass by various methods is only part of his ability. Captain De Maio fishes year round, for everything from codfish, shark, to tuna. The Captain is not a one-act fisherman and is capable at catching all species. Talent, knowledge and over 40 years experience fishing Montauk waters have made Captain John De Maio one of the best known fisherman on Long Island. Be it a hard core fishing group or a family trip, the Captain will do his best to keep you safe, comfortable and catching fish. My websites: New York Striper Fishing |
