Something which happened during Hotch's SWAT days comes back to haunt him and Reid falls victim. Reid is captured and tortured in the hope he will break and kill himself like his captor's son did years ago.

Reid comes back from a long sick leave with a new sense of confidence, which puts a strain on his relationship with Hotchner, leading Reid to question his place on the team. And it doesn't help that the current unsub is highly intelligent and uncatchable.
