Jonathan Firth was born in Essex, England and is the more youthful brother of actor Colin Firth. He studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama for three years. He has worked principally in tv for the BBC, wherever he grew to become a heartthrob as Richard Gray in the 1992 feudal drama Covington Cross. This was adopted with the mini-sequence Middlemarch, Wuthering Heights, Far From the Madding Crowd and An Ideal Husband, His other television credits involve the NBC mini collection Leprechauns and the historic drama Victoria & Albert.
