![]() I'm a bit of a DBZ fan of course, the fact I'm an author on this site should show that. I've always been interested in fiction, the various methods of worldbuilding and conveying messages and entertainment to people is fascinating to me. It's this fascination that led me to want to be a writer, something that I hope to improve with practice. Namely this practice, fanfiction and other creative works. I have other creative works in the past, each time I think I improve more and more. The most noteworthy is the quest "Life and Times of a Half-Saiyan King" which details the rise of Gossard, son of Bulma and Goku and the twin brother of Gohan. It is the main character of this quest that I draw my name from since it was in my opinion the most successful of my works to date, the first think I'd written that I'd classify as a work worthy of minor praise. My first real interaction with Dragonball Z was the Frieza fight when I was a little kid. It blew me away at the time, and sparked my interest in the overwhelming and powerful. Everything can always be a little bigger after all, though sometimes it can be taken a bit too far haha, so I try not to let my big number fetish overwhelm the story. Still, the planet-destroying tyrant and the pure-hearted hero that overpowers him captured my attention. Dragonball series: Great, but with flaws. Of course it is great, it is one of the most well-known Anime and Manga of all time right up there with Boruto's Dad, One Piece and Bleach. It codified the genre in many many ways, including the format of the theme song. Dragonball was hilarious, though the mistakes in Toriyama's writing are apparent here. It has a wider cast than the latter series but that cast isn't used to it's full potential especially in arcs after their introduction. It's also rather different tonally to DBZ and latter, so I'm not as much of a fan simply due to aesthetic taste (not to say it isn't brilliant, but I don't know if I'd get as into a Dragonball series if it didn't have Z attached due to my personal preferences in media) Z is unfortunately not flawless. Power Levels were created to prove the concept of powerscaling to be wrong and yet it does the exact opposite, Saiyans swiftly overshadow the Human cast, Goku returning in the Buu saga is a thematic spit in the face to the ending of the Cell Saga and with so many episodes and manga chapters why is the best explanation of Ki 'I dunno, it's lifeforce, btw flying is like a rocket with ki thrusters'. Super Saiyan and the idea of transforming for more strength and added powers is a great one, I just wish it had been explained more and fleshed out, the only time it comes up is as the most barebones explanation for the next form. I think GT made quite a few mistakes, but I think it was primarily in the very base of the show and the actual implementation while the concepts created within the setting are great. I hated the Black Star Dragonballs in their implementation but the concept is amazing, and I wish Super Saiyan 4 (hopefully renamed since it Isn't the successor to 3 but it's own thing fusing SS to Oozaru) would return to canon. Super has many issues, though many of them are merely the aftereffects of Zs flaws and Toriyamas lack of forward planning. Can someone Please explain Golden Frieza's sudden growth, why Super Saiyan 123 are still a thing, Super Saiyan God, the Super Saiyan God Ritual, how Vegeta got God Ki (is it a racial thing? is there a Namekian God or Human God or Frost Demon God if they did the same thing Vegeta did?), Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, why SSG isn't SG with SSB named SSG since it is a God that went Super Saiyan, why they didn't keep Future Trunks in the present timeline after nuking the Future Timeline with the Zeno Button and so many other questions. It is still riveting though and I do appreciate the attempt to bring the Human fighters into relevance or at least giving them roles to play besides cheerleaders. My favorite character from Dragonball... I also have a soft spot for Gohan, though admittedly it's mostly the romanticized notion rather than the canon depiction due to well, insert the general reasons here. I love the Saiyaman part of his character, and the warrior-scholar, but he just comes off a bit different to what my favored depiction would be. I just wish he took his life more seriously, in the goofy way he has. A proper Saiyaman for example, actively going out and Superheroing like Superman or the Flash while still being the posing obliviously-dorky Saiyaman we know, instead of the half-hearted attempt he actually does. |
