![]() Author has written 10 stories for Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Merlin. Name: Jay. No, that's not my real name. Age: 20-something. Location: Australia. Specifically, tropical North Queensland. It's not nearly as nice as it sounds. This is the ff.net account of the LJ/Dreamwidth user known as bewarethespork/jaythenerdkid. Who am I? A writer, reader, thinker, dreamer, musician and all-around Jill-of-all-trades who occasionally writes fanfic in a (so far unsuccessful) attempt to keep the plotbunnies from taking over her brain. What are my fandoms? Primarily Doctor Who, but I've also written for a handful of others, including Tamora Pierce's Tortall books, David Eddings' Tamuli, Merlin, How I Met Your Mother, Good Omens and more. When I first got into fandom several years ago, I wrote Harry Potter, but I've since stopped keeping up with the fandom. What do I write? Mostly gen and some non-explicit romance. I write more explicit romance occasionally, but usually anonymously or under friends-lock. I prefer one-shots to chapterfic and character studies over plot. My prose is sometimes a subtle shade of purple. I like talking about destiny and playing with myth and fantasy archetypes in somewhat metafictive ways. (Read as: I'm a little pretentious sometimes.) If you want overtly shippy OTP fic or uncensored smut, I'm probably not your gal. (Not that there's anything wrong with either of those styles; they're just not what I write.) If you like it when the Doctor is confronted with his destiny or when the author makes subtle jabs at the Cinderella myth, welcome! Do I write prompts/requests? Sometimes! I often do the open prompt meme at LJ, where people can leave me a prompt in any number of fandoms and I'll write them a ficlet. I've also participated in the Yuletide fic exchange a couple of times; the fandoms I wrote for were the Tortall books and Hot Fuzz. If, based on what you've read of my fic, you have a request for something you'd love me to write, send me a PM and I might consider it. Where can you find me? All of my fanfic, as well as my fannish meta and other fandom-related content, is archived at my Dreamwidth journal (jaythenerdkid). Feel free to subscribe if you'd like to keep up to date with my fannish musings and other writing. If you're just interested in the fic, here's my fic tag. I eventually post fanfic here as well, of course, but it generally takes some time. If you want to read my latest works, you're in the wrong place; this is more of a placeholder account. I've been on ff.net since I was thirteen, but the stories I wrote back then have all been deleted (with the exception of Diary of Draco, which is horrendously awful but which I remember with the vague, nostalgic fondness associated with one's school days). These days, most of my fannish activity happens at LJ and Dreamwidth, but since I know people here do read my fanfic, I try to make sure that I get around to uploading new stuff here every now and then. Will I beta for you? Every now and then, I get a beta request from someone. So far, I haven't taken any of them. This isn't because none of them met my standards (most of them did), or because I don't like beta-reading for people I don't know (I've done it plenty of times before), but rather because I'm a very busy full-time student with the sort of extra-curricular schedule that looks good on a resume but is not very conducive to a social life. For that reason, I probably won't commit to betaing a long fic, but if you have a one-shot that's less than 5000 words long, or if you just want someone with whom you can discuss your ideas, then I'd be happy to accept, provided that the story matches my interests and you possess a certain minimum level of facility with the English language. I'm not talking great literature, here - I just mean basic things, like correct spelling, grammar and punctuation (though you don't have to be perfect - we all make mistakes at times), and a basic grasp of the meanings of words. (This may sound obvious to you, but it's amazing how many people happily bandy about thousand-dollar words without having a clue what they actually mean.) Things I'm happy to do as a beta include proofreading and editing, helping you flesh out an idea and giving you suggestions for reworking awkward passages or finding an ending for your story when you're stuck. I won't rewrite, finish things for you or turn incoherent ideas into a polished story - those things are down to you, the author. If you'd still like me to beta for you, you can either send me a PM or email me directly at jaythenerdkid [at] inbox [dot] com.
