I'm Karl Kristiansen. I had been born in Connecticut. I spent nearly all of my childhood in Stonington, a little, seaside town for the Connecticut-Rhode Island border. My dad was a commercial fisherman and also since he was from Norway, life around the sea would be a natural for him. My mother would have been a housewife. We had been the normal '50's family. Most of my childhood was spent throughout the docks and fishing boats for sale of Stonington. In 1954, my pops and some of the other fishermen made a decision to try their luck at shrimping in Brownsville, Texas. After a few months, and very little success, we returned to Stonington. A lot of the Stonington boats were selling their catches in New Bedford, MA, so it wasn't any surprise that in 1959, we packed up and moved. # New Bedford remained my home through my secondary school years. I graduated from New Bedford Senior high school in 1965. I had created the opportunity head to college, however i prefered a hitch inside the Navy. If you recall, during those times, you only had a few choices: go to college, wait to become drafted, enlist or got married and hope all went well. # After an exciting ten weeks at NTC Great Lakes and a little while leave, I flew to Subic Bay within the Philippines, to trap my ship, the USS Mansfield DD-728. Our main mission was plane guard duty while using carrier USS Kittyhawk. We also alternated three day support fire missions with the other ships inside our group down the Vietnam coast or more the Saigon River a couple of times. A lot of excitement with an eighteen year-old kid. There was liberty calls in Hong Kong, Yokosuka, Subic Bay and Pearl Harbor. In June of 1966 I attended CT (Communication Tech) school in Pensacola, FLA. Upon graduation, I became provided for Bremerhaven, Germany for 2 years roughly. After being discharged My Photo 65-98from the Navy in 1969, I returned home and met the girl I'd wind up marrying in April of 1970. We've not one but two grown girls as well as four grandkids.
