I have been a fan of Tolkien’s works from the age of twelve. My first paperback copies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are dog eared and falling apart. Presently I am working my way through the Unfinished Tales and Lost Tales after finally acquiring copies. After reading The Silmarillion I highly recommend it as a fascinating book. The Silmarillion is an excellent book for understanding of Tolkien’s Elves. The Lord of the Rings movies are wonderful in their own right, however in my opinion the books reign supreme. I enjoy reading good fanfiction on LOTR and will not hesitate to offer constructive criticism. When any author brings a work to the public, that author needs to understand that they are opening their work to public criticism. When a writer receives constructive criticism, he or she needs to listen to the offered suggestions of improvement and view the criticism as a way to improve their writing skills. All writers need to thoroughly research their intended subject matter before writing a fic. If the author is writing in movie verse, they need to understand the segment of the movie or character they are writing about. If at any point in the movie verse fic they attempt to write a subject matter not thoroughly covered in the movie, such as the Entwives or Noldor, the writer needs to research that subject matter in the books. Personally I think that all writers should read the books if they are writing any fanfiction because the books are the original source for the movie. If a writer writes according to the movie verse, he or she needs to clearly post that their fic is movie verse because they are posting it under the book section of fanfcition.net. If the writer does not clearly post that they are following movie verse, readers have the right to assume that the author is attempting to write according to book canon and that the author simply does not understand the books. I greatly admire Tolkien’s books. Therefore until I have time to write a fan fiction that adequately portrays the world of Middle Earth I will not write and post a crappy story. Any writer who whines that he or she did not have time to think out their plot line will get no sympathy from me because that writer has the option of waiting to post the story. Although I do not have the time to write a story worthy of being posted I do enjoy reading LOTR fan fiction that is well written. Many stories are written with wonderful insight into the characters and make reading on ffnet worthwhile. However, when a writer fails to use decent grammar, spell-check, and a beta reader I feel that individual needs to challenge themselves to improve their writing style. When I finally find time to write a story I’ll welcome any constructive criticism that comes my way. Until then if anyone has a problem with a review they can contact me through e-mail leahsmiles16@hotmail.com. Stories that break canon need to be labeled as AU. If they are not labeled as AU I will point out their mistakes. I frequently chat on the PPC message board. If I see a fic that violates canon I reserve the right to post that fic on the message board for other PPC members to read and offer constructive criticism. The Protectors of the Plot Continuum write stories pointing out flaws in poorly written fics after the author consistently refuse to improve their story. The PPC board mostly scouts for the assassins while working together to post constructive criticism. All PPC members valiantly attempt to help curb the flood of garbage in LOTR fanfiction. Go to the PPC website if you are frustrated by the awful fics on the net and wish to report any canon breaches. |
