![]() Avid&rabid strictly Willabeth ff reader! If I stumble upon your story, I will likely leave a review, I appreciate it very much that you let me read and enjoy your work :) --oOo-- About At World's End... SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! THE CURSE, quotes from TED ELLIOTT and TERRY ROSSIO: "If the person Jones had been in love with had been true, and waited for him, and stayed in love with him for ten years, upon his return to land his curse would have been lifted. That's a big part of the reason why Jones is so bitter and cruel. He had a chance to lead a normal life ... but his lover was fickle." "Jones corrupted himself by his own choice to abandon the task assigned him. Calypso did not control that choice." "But the basic requirement is that Will agrees captain the Flying Dutchmen (in return for what the film reveals) and that he can step on land but once every ten years, and that at any time, if he finds a love that is true (this is part of the original Flying Dutchman opera by the way) then his attachment to the ship is broken." "Does it reflect some sort of odd, perhaps sexist, bias -- on the part of viewers? If I was watching the film, I'd say to myself, "Ah, so Elizabeth ends up Pirate King, and Will sails off to his own sort of purgatory. Clever, now they can write all sorts of stories and adventures Elizabeth has in that ten year period, before he returns." "C'mon. Everyone assumes that there will be more stories for Jack. Even Will could have adventures in his realm -- and there's nothing to say he doesn't come up with some way around the rules. And Elizabeth has not given up her title of Pirate King, last I checked." "Will is released from the curse, then who is the next Captain of the Flying Dutchman? "The movie does not state where the next Captain comes from, who picks the next Captain, or what happens to the crew. But I think the movie implies -- strongly -- that Calypso would be involved in the choice. Probably whoever it turned out to be would have 'a touch of destiny.'" "Something people seem to miss, is that the island Elizabeth is on at the very end is not the same island where Will left her. Maybe it's just because I know they were shot in two vastly different locations, but still, to me it is obviously a different island." "Whether you believe the film demonstrates that Will's curse is broken or not ... it's at least possible that an adventurous Elizabeth, or Will, or Jack, or anyone, could go on a quest to attempt to free him ... desire and knowlege, wits and effort, and so much is possible." "I think the movie implies that if you don't do the job of ferrying souls, you end up corrupted, in body and mind, like Jones. Jones decided to not do the job, so in theory Will has that same choice. But neither can step foot on land." "So, pretty soon after the movie was released, Terry posted here that it was possible to discern from the movie that Will's service ended after ten years, but it was difficult to do so (go back and read the post). He did not definitively state that is what would happen, only that it could be discerned that it could happen. However, he also added that he believes that it ended." "Whether or not Will's service ends after ten years is beside the point of Elizabeth and Will's story, and any definitive statement, one way or another, actually dilutes the point of their story. The intention of the movie is to leave the question unresolved, to leave the audiences' understanding of Will and Elizabeth's future uncertain, because that is far more reflective of the circumstances the characters are in. They can't know, they can only have faith (as in "faithful" -- you know, that word does have meanings other than just"sexual fidelity"). "So: its possible to discern either version of the "ten years-one day" condition from the movie, but where it should have been equally possible, editing resulted in it be more difficult to discern one version than the other." "The terms of service Calypso charged to Davy Jones did not require Jones to cut out his heart and put it in a chest, or require that if someone stabbed the heart, theirs must take its place, or anything heart-related -- he's the one that did all that, and only after he'd been Captain of the Dutchman for ten years)." "There was much discussion -- that occured over course of the entire production period for both DMC and AWE -- about Elizabeth's wardrobe, accessories and appearance in that last scene, but the decision, ulimtately, was to make it true to the moment we see: one parent taking a child to meet the other parent for the first time, after a long separation." -- NO Jack's kid!!!
