![]() Author has written 6 stories for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Inheritance Cycle, and Dark Souls. Percy Jackson and the Olympians Worldbuilding Fixes So, PJatO is a great series. However, it DOES have noticeable flaws and omissions when it comes to the world-building. Where did the Mist come from? Why do people like Procrustes, who were demigods, dissolve like monsters? WHY DO MONSTERS DISSOLVE AT ALL?‼ Below, I have written out explanations and fixes to how these actually work. All of these fit within the established canon with no adjustments, so feel free to use them within your own fics. Please credit me if you do, though. Oh, and if you have any other things in the series that I have not listed below explained, or if you have questions/counterarguments for any of the points below, feel free to PM me. How Souls Work Killing somebody involves removing their soul from the body. When they die, the body becomes unable to host a soul. A free soul is naturally drawn to the underworld by the power of Erebos. In the underworld, there is a persistent draw towards Tartarus, due to the eddies of power released by the barrier between Erebos and Tartarus (the same is why souls are drawn toward the Erebos-Gaea barrier). Weak souls are sucked in, strong ones can make it through Judgement/EZ Death (A more realistic reason to do EZ Death — if you don't think that you can hold on long enough to last through Judgement). Souls do not have to go through processing though. If they are so inclined, they can wander the underworld to their heart's desire, or until they get caught by Hades's servants, get sucked into Tartarus, or find a route back to the upper world, where they can exists as ghosts, and can attempt to steal people's bodies (Eidolons). Monster souls are the same as human souls, but are generally weaker souls, explaining how they can be killed with a single hit of a magic metal, and why they always seem to end up in Tartarus. Inhuman, nonsentient monsters (i.e. hydras, nemean lions, sows) go through the nature spirit reincarnation route, but often end up getting sucked into Tartarus halfway. Why Monsters Disintegrate Their bodies are supplied with the essence of Tartarus to regenerate, but do not maintain well on the surface. Long-lived monsters can replace this essence with the essence of Gaea by ingesting magical creatures that are native to the surface world. This is why monsters DON'T dissolve in Tartarus (citation needed) and why things like Arai (citation needed) and Hellhounds, which are not gaean souls, do not dissolve into dust. Earthborn and Giants turn into mud because their bodies are not created by Tartarus, they're created by Gaea. When the soul of the monster is removed (when it dies) any remaining energy from Tartarus is released, which is why the body turns to dust. How Magical Metals Work Celestial Bronze: Separates the soul from the body. Very powerful souls are resistant because they bind themselves very tightly to their bodies, which is why demigods and stronger monsters don't die in a single hit. Imperial Gold: Replaces the soul in the body. Obviously, the energy it replaces it with isn't actually alive, so the body dies, but it does take the same place of it. Poisoning occurs because the Imperial Gold acts like a second soul in the body, fighting for dominance. Strengthening your hold (i.e. character building) can starve it of access, eventually freeing yourself of it entirely. Stygian Iron: EATS the soul. You heard that right. It pulls the soul out of the body, and then traps it into the weapon/item. The soul can be harvested for energy, and can escape if the item is broken. This is a constant, on-contact effect, but is not as powerful as the dispelling ability of celestial bronze. Due to the constant, on-contact effect, it is not safe for any who are not born of the underworld to use. Silver (Any type, Reyna's use of a silver pocketknife in BoO disproves any ideas about "Consecrated Silver" or anything. Alternatively, that might HAVE been some sort of "Consecrated Silver"): Weakens and damages the soul (specifically the Will, see below), which lessens its ability to maintain its hold on a body. More often used in ranged weapons than melee, because it makes a great support weapon, but is less effective on its own. How Divinity Works So, as mentioned previously, all souls are pretty much the same. However, something has to explain what separates gods, primordials, mortals, and monsters from each other. To understand this, we need understand the make up of a soul. Each soul has three attributes: Will Power, and energy. Will is what controls a soul when it dies. Will allowed the Triumvirate to stay on the surface and escape death, as well as mortal souls to stay away from the attraction of Tartarus. Mortals have the most will of all, since both monsters and gods go to Tartarus when they die. Power is what determines how powerful a being is. Titans have more power than Olympians, who have more than minor gods, who have more than demigods (usually). Pure mortals have no power at all, which is why magical metals ignore them, save for silver, which directly attacks the Will, which mortals DO have, though they have it in such abundance that it has little effect on them, which explains how you can get cut with a silver knife without instantly dying, unlike a laistrygonian or werewolf. Finally, Energy is your raw amount of power (note the lack of capitalization) you are connected to, though not necessarily how much you can manipulate at once. Primordials have the most energy, followed by the gods and Titans. Without the Power to manipulate it, Energy does not do you much good, Primordial: Huge amounts of Energy, varying amounts of Power based on status (the more major the primordial, the more Power it has); NO will, which explains why they don't come back after they die — their spirit gets sucked into the Primordial Chaos, and most likely stops existing as an independent entity. Daimon: Under Construction. Mortal: No Energy or Power, huge amounts of Will, which explains how they are known for changing fate, and can avoid getting sucked into Tartarus when they die. God/Titan: Varying Power, varying Energy (always more Power than Energy), low Will. Demigod: Huge Will, just like a mortal, varying amounts of Power and Energy in relation to the amount possessed by their godly parent. Monster: Low Will, varying amounts of power (never a lot), varying amounts of Energy (also never a lot) What's the deal with Typhon? He's a Primordial, and, rare for them, he's the child of two of the original Primordials. Why is the Underworld/Tartarus so different? Where ARE the Underworld/Tartarus? Why do underworld monsters all have similar characteristics? Incomplete explanation, but the gist of it is that each primordial is sort-of it's own world (like how Tartarus is sort-of underneath Gaea, but also kind-of it's own world), and each world has different physical laws. Earth is embodied by Gaea, and most primordials/deities/monsters/mortals are somehow decended from her, or at least created by her decendants (i.e. humans, Argus). The underworld is embodied by Erebos, primordial lord of darkness, while the pit of Tartarus is embodied by the primordial, Tartarus. Nyx seems to do her own thing in her 'Mansion of Night' which sits atop the Pit of Chaos, but that's not the end of the story. Nyx IS the night, and as such, must have some way of influencing what goes on in the sky. Primordials don't seem to have much power in each other's domains (Ouranus's assassination, Tartarus's lack of pursuit of Percy/Annabeth), so we must assume that she either has her own conduit to the surface, or, more likely, isn't actually within Tartarus after all. All of these worlds/demiplanes seem to have their own laws of physics/magic, (i.e. monster regeneration, attraction of souls, etc.) and from TLT and HoH, we can see that creatures from one of them do not do well in the others. As such, creatures that are born directly from those primordial-worlds (Hellhounds/Arai for Nyx, Earthborn/Giants/Hecatantontieres for Gaea) seem to operate almost as if they are part of the primordial, with how their powers work. Hades, and his children manage to get a bit of Erebus's power due to having a parallel domain and living in that domain for an extensive period. Hades is no longer purely of Gaean stock, instead he is a mix of Gaea and Erebos, and gets some of Erebos's power due to being more directly in contact with him. How does the mist work? As the various civilizations around the world slowly spread out their influence, their gods also began to reach out. This eventually led to a series of incidences where pantheons would collide, leading to terrible wars that often destroyed their home civilizations. Eventually, the various pantheons of deities met up and decided to divvy up the world between them, and stay mostly within their home ranges after that. Each pantheon also cloaks itself in its own version of the Mist to reduce conflicts and interactions with other pantheons, and conceals the existence of other pantheons from their own followers. What's the deal with Alaska? How is it the "Land Beyond the Gods" when Canada, which is actually part of Not America, is? Coming soon, will be related to the Interpantheonic Politics section below. Interpantheonic Politics Coming soon (I want to read at least two books of the Pandava Quartet and Stormrunner series before I pass judgement, so that I have at least 5 different pantheons (Greco-Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Hindu, Mayan) to work with, before I start working out a structure. TBM was somewhat helpful with this, and so I'll probably wait for the 4th book in ToA as well, since it may have some additional clues.). Ideas so far: Interpantheonic Mist that makes things from other pantheons resemble your own without closer examination; given ranges on earth that act as the "home territory" for a given pantheon, with them having to follow certain rules when outside their home range; This is Leo... Copy and paste him wherever you can... Soon he will take over the world. :) The Fantasy Kitchen Sink Here is the complete list of things that are so far considered "Canon" within my fanfictions. Why should you care? No particular reason, but if you have read this far into my profile anyway, then you're probably just eager for every last word that I have to write, so you'll read it regardless. Percy Jackson: My primary fandom. Most of my fics will be heavily influenced by this. Primarily grounded in America, but to some extent has characters scattered throughout the world i.e. the Kerkopes, the wind gods, Triptoplemus, etc. Home range comprises most of the US (excluding Alaska and most of Canada) as well as western Europe and the area surrounding the Mediterranean. Kane Chronicles: The Egyptians are spread pretty evenly throughout the world, concentrated in their 360 nomes. The Duat exists as a parallel plane of existence, and it's various levels are analogous to the primordial demiplanes that I talked about above. Since they've spent the past two thousand years essentially ignoring their gods, they rave relatively less of an impact on interpantheonic politics, but that could potentially change following TSS. Magnus Chase: Low concentration on earth, most of the action happens on the other 8 worlds, which act like their own demiplanes and are connected by Yggdrasil, which is a hub-demiplane. Primary range includes Scandinavia (Greenland/Finland/Norway/Iceland/Denmark) and Greenland, with England being technically theirs but acting as a borderland with the Celtic Pantheon. Mako Mermaids: Camp "Fish-Blood" (thanks Leo) is retconned to be part of their mythos. Magical, but generally keep to themselves. Range includes Oceania (Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, New Guinea), Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia), Madagascar, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hispañola, and the mid-Atlantic. Inheritance Cycle: Parallel dimension, NOT a demiplane. Has it's own creator, who was roughly equivalent to Chaos, but is completely dormant. Getting from earth to there requires a LOT of power. A primordial can do it, or a dozen or so gods, or a few hundred elves. All of the Alagaësian deities are from earth, who originally found their way there. The Olympian gods were kicked out, the portals broken, and the world barred to their access by Eragon the First, after a rather ugly incident involving Zeus and then-princess Dellanir of the Elves. Suffice to say, there is a reason that he hasn't had any immortal children in thousands of years. Lorien Legacies: The Entity is Chaos. When it manifests, most deities on earth go temporarily dormant as their energy is being diverted to form the Entity, which is part of why the Entity manifests so rarely. Lorien is a planet very far away, and so is Mogadore. Depending on what I eventually decide to write, the invasion will be either post- TLO or post BoO. Harry Potter: Wizards are magical creatures like any other. Stick em with celestial bronze, and they'll die, just like demigods. They won't turn to dust though, because their bodies are mortal bodies, and their wills are strong enough to not get sucked into Tartarus. Wizards are everywhere, but for the most part don't really meddle into Grand Affairs, or cause enough problems for the gods to get involved. Wizard-Demigods ARE a thing, but their demigod powers come at expense of their magical ablities. Stormrunner (RR Presents): Canon, as soon as I read the book. I don't know enough about it to state it's placement in my canon explicitly, but I'm guessing it takes place partially on earth, and partially on various demiplanes. Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California are borderlands that are under the power of both the Greco-Roman and the Mayan Pantheons, and so they both try to tread relatively lightly in those areas. Primary range is Mexico. Pandava Quartet (RR Presents): The RiordanWiki summary was confusing as all hell, I'm going to have to read the books before passing any judgments. My gut feeling is that it would be similar to Stormrunner, in that their gods mostly exist in their own set of demiplanes and have a limited presence on earth, but I have to read the book(s) first. Artemis Fowl: Fairies do exist, and are all Fred, the Vampire Accountant: Parahumans exist. "Hell" and the Fey Lands exist as separate dimensions, similarly to Alagaësia. The Agency DOES know about the gods (and not just the greco-roman ones), but is banned from interfering with them by the Treaties. Gideon is probably equivalent to a Titan in raw strength, but also has power levels to draw upon comparable to a greater Olympian, such as Poseidon or Zeus (though none of them have a patch on Hades). Most of the older parahumans know about the gods to some extent, but stay out of each other's affairs. Gods, titans, minor gods, of all pantheons are referred to under the catch-all term as "Outsiders", while half-bloods are "Half-Outsiders". Vampires CAN drink demigod blood, but CANNOT drink Ichor. Parahumans do not have the special "demigod-detection" ability of greek monsters, because they were not covered by Lamia's spell (Son of Magic) Trials of Apollo: Go die in a fire. The Triumvirate is a lame-aѕѕ enemy, and if those three emperors could stick around, then why hasn't Washington, or Napoleon, or Cleopatra, or any of a multitude of other extremely famous people. THAT BEING SAID, lots of things inside ToA are not really dumb, like the other oracles, or the Weighstation, and such, so those can stay. List of Story Seeds This is my list of story seeds: individual ideas which are strong enough to significantly alter canon enough for an interesting fanfiction to result. It's possible that one or more of them may end up being combined. BEHOLD, the Story Seeds: Star Wars The Force Unfettered: What if Starkiller DID manage to kill the Emperor at the end of The Force Unleashed? With a splintered empire, an unformed Rebellion, and a practically nonexistent force presence, how will the galaxy fare? Primarily based on Expanded Universe material, but may end up referencing, or even including, material from Star Wars: Rebels, as well as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (just for Saw's Partisans, if I decide to include them). May end up becoming a larger universe, rather than a single book or series. May end up becoming a collaborative effort, if I can generate enough interest. Percy Jackson and the Olympians A Cruel World: Annabeth sacrificed herself to save Luke and Thalia.Thalia and Luke react to the grief in different ways, with Thalia becoming more taciturn and impulsive, while Luke's fatal flaw becomes Excessive Loyalty and Low Self-Worth. He's not going to forget his wrath toward the gods (or himself), but, like Percy, he's going to put the good of his fellow demigods ahead of his own feelings. Kronos will most likely end up rising a few years earlier than in Riordan canon, though Nico and Bianca could still end up as part of the story. Thalia will be the child of the prophesy. There will be BIG differences as compared to the original series. A Darkened Path: In The Lightning Thief, Percy came perilously close to falling into Tartarus. What if he had? In Tartarus, he will meet new friend(s), forge new alliances, and be a very different person by the time he finally escapes. Percy will be darker, but most definitely NOT evil. The story will definitely run up through The Last Olympian, and MAY include Heroes of Olympus. A Second Chance: A constellation, a Titan, and three ghosts meet up in Tartarus...no, it's not the setup for a joke, it's the plot for a fanfiction! Hades is concerned about the Doors of Death being in Tartarus. He knows something must be done about it, but at the same time, it's not like anyone would willingly jump into Tartarus, right? So instead, he propositions a handful of the greatest (dead) heroes of the age thusly: take a jump into Tartarus, close the Doors of Death, and any who make it out will be alive again. Bridge Across The Stars: What if Sally Jackson had met Fredrick Chase? What if they married? How would Percy and Annabeth's lives be different if Annabeth had a supportive family and Percy had a sibling to help him (and no Gabe)? Full re-write of the series, not a one-shot. Percy and Annabeth growing up together is used to justify a larger alt-history (though it will provide a very interesting dynamic between the two). NOT Percabeth. A Single Choice: What if Percy had asked Luke to come with him on his quest? Evil, Mine: Post-Giant War Percy gets thrown into an alternate world, through a plot thing (Curse by Kronos? Falling into the Primal Chaos in House of Hades? The ever-popular Banished by Gaea? Doesn't matter.) to a terrible, terrible alternate world where Kronos won. With the mortal world in chaos and his own life gone, Percy will have to navigate a treacherous web of familiar faces and sinister secrets in his final chance to earn his happy ending. Dark as hell, but will NOT have a downer ending, and at least one ship will survive together. Between Worlds: Reading-The-Books stories for all of my stories. Chaos drags the characters from one of my stories to the main universe, along with a bunch of books, because he's bored. Annabeth, Homework, and a Baby Empousa: Percy Jackson's Senior Year: When Percy and Annabeth accidentally run into Kelli and Joe Bob on their way to school, what happens next is a no-brainer: kill them, don't get killed, and don't be late for class. But unfortunately, fate has other ideas, and when Percy and Annabeth discover that their two foes had a child with them, things get much more complicated. OR, Percy and Annabeth adopt a baby empousa during their senior year after mistakenly killing her parents. Will likely have a crossover with Camp Echidna by Pseudophoenix (from which I am also adopting her story.) Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard Amir Fadlan and the Gods of Asgard: "My name is Amir Fadlan, and this is the story about what happened after I died." OR Amir dies and becomes an Einherji in TSoS. Harry Potter Yin: When Harry finds Draco Malfoy sobbing over a letter, he's not especially inclined to be sympathetic. Yet they will both find that even the most plain facades can hide untold depths, and together might make a way for a better future. Drarry friendship, starts mid-OotP. JUST like his father: What if Snape was sent to collect Harry, instead of Hagrid? Deltora Becoming the Mask: "My name is Jasmine." Those words would change the life of a grade 3 Ol forever. Initially assigned the task of monitoring the quest to repair the Belt, a young Ol must gradually make a decision between sworn duty and bonds of friendship. Crossover ideas These are ideas for crossovers that I may write. And those that I am writing. Y'know, in case you didn't read the title. TV Tropes — many Trope-Tan and the End of the Universe(s): It's TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt, and only Trope-Tan can stop it! With her RagtagBunchOfMisfits drawn from the ultimate MegaCrossover...OK, can I stop talking like this? Thanks. Anyway, it'll feature characters and settings from such diverse fandoms as: Final Fantasy VII (Who will be donating a main character in the form of Zack Fair) and more, as well as jokes, pop-culture references, etc. If you're such an unlucky person that your life has not yet been graced with the majesty that is TV Tropes, go HERE =-=-=- tvtropes.org And if you want to know who this "Trope-Tan person that I'm talking about is", go THERE ~-~-~-~tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/Tropetan Percy Jackson — many Roadtrip: Percy and Annabeth are tired. They've just made it out of Tartarus, fought in the Giant War, and united the camps. They are done with greek mythological junk for the time being. So, the decide to go on a roadtrip, throughout the world. Of course, nothing can ever be simple when it comes to Percy, and on their journey, they will encounter Wizard Wars, living clay dragons, alien fugitives, Irish geniuses, and more. CONFIRMED CROSSES: Artemis Fowl (post-TLC, pre-TTP); Last Dragon Chronicles (either between FS and TFE, or pre-TFW); Harry Potter (DH); Lorien Legacies (Pre-Fo5); Fred, the Vampire Accountant (Unknown, definitely post-Undeath&Taxes) Percy Jackson — Deltora Ice Among Crystals: A big flash of light, and three harmonious voices snickering: these are the last things Percy notices before he's abruptly shunted into a new world. Seewead Brain is going to have a hell of a time getting out of this one.OR: The Fates kick Percy into Deltora so that he can help Lief, Barda, and Jasmine. Post-TLO and between TSS and DM. Water Among Shadows: Deltora may have been retaken, but the adventure is far from done. Percy must still manage to find a way home, and Lief must find a way to free his people. Meanwhile, the Shadowlord's plans draw ever closer to fruition, and the existence of a boy from another world only brings new opportunities for all sides. Sequel to Ice Among Crystals. Percy Jackson — Final Fantasy VII The Calamity from the Skies: What if Jenova had fallen to Earth, instead of Gaia? How would Percy&Co react to this new, extraterrestrial threat? Percy Jackson — Inheritance Cycle Percy Jackson and the New World: Annabeth died at the end of BoO, Gaea kicked Percy into Alagaësia as her dying act. Watch as Percy is Percy, and shakes things up. NO DRAGONRIDER PERCY. Starts at the beginning of Eldest, and post-BoO. In Progress, 0/4 books completed. Percy Jackson — Lorien Legacies Daughter of Who?: After the Giant War, Percy and Annabeth decide to take a nice, relaxing vacation to Europe, specifically Spain. Unfortunately, nothing ever happens the easy way, especially when your name is Percy Jackson and you decide to explore a cave outside Santa Teresa. OR: Percabeth finds Marina, thinks she's a demigoddess, and she takes them up on the offer to go to a place for people "like her." Ascendant: The Loric are earth's last hope for survival...unless you count the demigods. Takes place either post-TLO or post-BoO (it doesn't really matter, so I haven't decided yet), and during the finale of Ro7. Will continue through Ua1, and possibly beyond. Wise Girl: Nobody messes with his Wise Girl. Especially not pasty-faced freaks with laser-guns. OR: Percy meets up with Malcolm, Adam, and/or Sam (or alternatively, John and Nine) while trying to save someone of his own. DemiNot: "Bombed" school, gigantic footprints, missing teenager, national manhunt...all signs of a half-blood coming into their heritage. But when Percy and Annabeth follow up the lead to it's source, they will find that the truth is far stranger than even they could have imagined. OR: Percabeth tries to track down John Smith. Percy Jackson — Order of the Stick The Order of the Demigods: A Percy Jackson AU of the Order of the stick. Featuring: Snarls in the Threads of Reality: At the presumed end of Curse of Phobetor (Water-Smurf never finished it), Tiasal falls into the Rift, which allows Xykon to escape. But life is persistent, and World 1.0 has some surprises of it's own. NOTE: This story is a fanfiction of a fanfiction, and involves characters and plot from Water-Smurf's very excellent Oneiroi series, which is a Redcloak/Vaarsuvius series where MitD didn't save Vaarsuvius. I HIGHLY suggest that you read it. Also, it is not based on the aformentioned Fantasy Kitchen Sink. Percy Jackson — Wayside School Percy Jackson goes to Wayside School: Desperate to find a school that will accept her son, Sally ends up enrolling Percy in the only school weirder than he is. The only question is who is in for a bigger shock: Mrs. Jewl's class, or their new student. Set between TLT and SoM. Lighthearted, no Big Plot. Notice: To all those who think Homophobia is wrong and want to fight for a better future for our gay and lesbian friends, please repost this into your profile: What you call being "too lazy to review" is what we call "a flame to the pages" as the writers. That one minute or two that you felt "too lazy" to review is another minute of creeping discouragement that all writers feel as they begin to think: "Why am I even here…?"; "What's even the point of continuing?"; "My skills must be terrible…no one cares for my story…"; "I'll never be a good writer...I quit.". These are only a few thoughts that go through every writer's head- that go through MY head- when we put out a chapter / story with all our heart and soul within, and we sit there…and sit…and wait…and not a single person says even a word... If you're not a writer, you have NO IDEA how much that hurts. If you ARE a writer, then I'm sure you know just how great it feels when someone is kind enough to leave a heartwarming and encouraging review, and you read it, smiling while thinking…"Wow…I did it…" So, why not give fellow writers the same luxury here? Too many times I've seen epic and utterly beautiful works of literary art fall to pieces before finally being abandoned due to the terrible discouragement that the lack of reviews can cause. Sometimes, it is so severe that the very writer himself decides to quit, denying the world his or her skills of writing that I'm it would have deeply enjoyed. So… Dear bullies, See that girl you just called fat? She is starving herself. You know that girl you just called ugly? She spends hours putting on make-up hoping people will like her. That boy you just tripped? He is abused enough at home. See that old man you made fun of cause of the ugly scars? He fought for our country. See that young boy you just made fun of for always being sick? He has to walk home in the snow cause his family is too poor. That guy you just made fun of for crying? His mother is dying. Re-Post this if you are against bullying. I bet many of you won't. Your life is probably not as harsh as theirs, or you're just a douchebag. I don't agree with the previous sentence, but I DID want to repost it, so it had to stay. If people think you are mentally insane...copy and paste this onto your profile. If you spend multiple hours each day reading or writing or a combination of both...copy and paste this on your profile. If you or your best friend is insane copy and paste this onto your profile. If you hear voices of the characters in your head...copy and paste this on your profile. If you've ever asked a really stupid, obvious question, copy and paste this one your profile. So, I don't want to bother writing this on all my stories/chapters, so I am just going to say it once here. I don't own Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Heroes of Olympus, Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, The Inheritance Cycle, Lorien Legacies, Wayside School, Stormrunner, Pandava Quartet, or anything but my specific usages of the characters within my own stories (I think) and my Original Characters (OCs) posted on this site. Lights out, show's over, we're done here. |
