Paris. Her home is in the street of the Jews, above a jeweler's
shop. Her father, M. Levis, is the proprietor. Mlle. Rebecca Levis is
twenty, and engaged to be married in October of that same year. He is a
fine man, her fiance, a scholar, perhaps to become a rabbi one day.
That she feels for him none of the passion of Heloise for Abelard,
of Isolde for Tristan, of Dido for Aeneas, is small misfortune.
Jonas Dauphin is just eight years her senior, and a philanthropist,
generous with his modest purse. He is even possessed of all his teeth.

Our young heroine has one sister, Estelle, an intrepid girl of seventeen or eighteen.
The girl's mother is a relic of old observance, Orthodox in her dress and speech.
The father is a Bonapartist. Our readers will recall that Napoleon was beneficient to the Jews.

The family Levis keeps one servant, a Huguenot lady, Mme. Gandeau.

Rebecca goes about in a dress of half-silk, an economy that suits her well. In her hand is a jeweler's loupe, and a libretto; Mozart:

Le Nozze de Figaro. She fancies herself a Cherubino, when she has had her fill of
vino tinto.

Her true name is Janna. She is 20 years old, and taking a semester off college (University of Mary Washington, in VA)

to sing and wait tables at a restaurant near her home. She is a soprano, with an F above high C, when she is very warmed up.

She is currently in love with Les Miserables, especially Grantaire and Jean Prouvaire. She has an overactive imagination and

you can't tell her she can't date them. She has a couple of real guys in her life but prefers the fictional ones. She is Jewish,

and her ancestors probably fled from the Spanish Inquisition. If you met her, you would recognize her by her eclectic fashion sense.

She loves couture and invariably follows the French runways. Oh, and siamese cats. Especially fat ones.
