- Port Royal is in Jamaica; Tortuga is in Haiti
- To the best of my guess, Pirates of the Caribbean takes place between 1678 and 1692: The British took control of Jamaica in 1670 with the Treaty of Madrid, so even if Swann was the very first Governor to be at Port Royal, he would not have been crossing before then. As we know, the movie must take place 8 years after their initial crossing, so 1678 becomes our earliest date. And of course, in 1692 (June 7), 66 of Port Royal fell into the ocean in a huge earthquake and the city never fully recovered. (It, plus the subsequent tsunamis, killed between 1000 and 3000 people - over half the city's population.) They moved the governor's seat to Kingston, across the bay, which sets the story decidedly before this point. However, historically, Port Royal was much more like the film's portrayal of Tortuga. It was a pirate den and was called more than once the "richest and wickedest city in the world."
