Life's been hard on Beth recently, but she finds solace one night on the top of a pool table. She never could've imagined salvation would appear in the form of the dirty redneck, Daryl Dixon.

...and the one time they still weren't. A series of interactions between Beth and Daryl at the prison. I don't buy into the theory that they never interacted, despite how little of it we saw on television. They spent the winter as part of the same small group, and were both part of the core group setting up the prison.

Rick's unable to sleep and decides to walk the halls of the prison in search of some peace when he finds himself a voyeur to Daryl & Beth enjoying each other's company in the library. He decides to stay when he feels a warmth swell in his chest at the love he sees between this unlikely couple. A couple that unknowingly soothe a hurt inside Rick. Bethyl smut ;) Ricks POV. Enjoy!

Rick is unable to stand the utter quiet of the prison at night. He keeps hallucinating, but none of his hallucinations are about Lori and the screams that echo in his head don't belong to her either. He rushes to that man's cell to make sure he is okay, but as soon as he gets close to him he can't keep himself away anymore. And neither can he (M for smut and gore. Rickyl).

When Daryl can't sleep, he goes outside to get some air, only to find Glenn on watch. The boy sees that his friend is upset and tries to help Daryl feel a little better about losing Merle. (No slash!)

When Daryl returns to the prison after putting down Merle, Rick is there to comfort him.

Even as much as he might not want there to be, someone's waiting in the wings with the bandages he needs. Daryl's struggle at the end of "This Sorrowful Life" and possible aftermath. As a kid Daryl used to climb into Merle's bed at night, searching for safety in his big brother's presence. Merle kicked him out but Daryl never gave up. Times change and years later, Merle is just happy to have his brother back unhurt, breathing, and alive. Full description inside. Rated T for language.

As the apocalypse crashes down around them, Daryl and Merle only have each other in the flight from their childhood home. The struggle to survive brings out the anger, resentment, and love that forever tie them together.

No one expected Daryl to make much of himself, always assuming he'd turn out just like Merle but when the world goes to hell and a little girl gets lost, he finds himself being the only one who cares and he's not going to let Sophia's life go to hell just because people don't expect much from her either.

In the aftermath of the walkers invading the farm, Rick feels overwhelmed when all that has happened starts to catch up to him. His strength comes from an unexpected source.

Sophia wasn't in the barn. Merle was. AU to the ending of "Pretty Much Dead Already"
