(Warning: Contains some mildly disturbing imagery, related to a character's work in a butcher shop. It's also implied that small animals, especially birds, are killed for use in spells.)

Modern-day AU. When Peeta is spared his life and hired by Cato as a gunman, he is forced to leave everything behind; his family, girlfriend, and a blooming career, and ultimately move south. Three years harden him as he finds himself a changed man, and in an escalating tangle of mess he suddenly wants to disaffiliate himself from.

"I don't need it," Peeta says firmly. "I don't want anything from you." And it's not true, there are things he wants from Katniss; her smile, her laugh, her warm breath on his neck, her body moving beneath his in the dark. But he doesn't want them as part of an exchange. He thought they made an odd pair, the two of them. The oddness, he thought sadly, surely rested with him. Katniss thought they were perfect. He was perfect. Modern day AU.

Peeta Mellark wanted Katniss ever since he could remember...and he was not as innocent as everyone thought.
