AU where John didn't go to the flat to see the DVD Mary left, Lestrade did. He saved Sherlock from Culverton. John left his cane there as a goodbye and intended on never seeing Sherlock again. Sherlock realizes this and writes him a goodbye letter.

Sherlock loses all he holds dear, but no one knows it when he falls down the rabbit hole of despair. They can only watch in horror as he must dig himself from the depths of sorrow and back into the light.

All thinking things had rituals. Hank Anderson was no different. Take his Christmas ritual of wallowing in despair and not getting up if he could help it, for example. That routine was about to be broken by an overly enthusiastic detective android. And maybe that wasn't such a bad thing.
