"You're a wicked man." His breath tickled her ear. "Name your price." Or: Murtagh struggles with the role he must play in Galbatorix's service, and a commoner finds herself in an uncommon position.

Murtagh is a little rough around the edges, and Tornac is used to dealing with the fallout caused by his student's outbursts. This particular outburst, however, leads him into new territory.

The price of his blood is that of others, and if they don't pay up then he'll take it from them, measure it out neatly then take his exit while the cut's still bleeding. It's only fair. [AU]

In a twist of fate, their positions are reversed—Nasuada is captured while Murtagh finds himself fighting for the Varden in her place—until he is captured as well. "If I asked, would you fight for me? Change sides for me? Betray your comrades for me?"

In a switch of roles Brom stole the red egg and recovered it first from the thief. Brom is defeated by Morzan but survives and is able to escape. Morzan learns of Eragon's birth after Selena's return. After her death he personally kills Eragon's relatives and kidnaps him. Brom retaliates by kidnapping Murtagh. Eragon grows up in the shadow of Galbatorix who spares him.

In a world where Eragon and Murtagh have been raised by their fathers as enemies, their rivalry comes to a head upon the Burning Plains. (AU one-shot. Longer description within)
