Descent- In progress

I stared up into his piercing eyes, hoping to find a key to unlock his secrets kept behind them, "Why can't you open up to me?" Hearing him sigh, I knew that this wouldn't be easy for either of us.

"If I do, I risk losing everything I have," He broke the connection between our eyes, keeping his fixed on the feather held in his hand, "I can't go through that again." he mumbled.

Reaching my hand out, I grasped the feather and took it from him, "You told me about this," I held up the soft quill and saw him frown, "so why can't you tell me more?"

Giving me a small, pain filled smile, he held my free hand with both of his larger ones. Without uttering a word, I knew that he had made his mind up- he wasn't going to tell me. It was going to take a lot more to find out the truth.

"What aren't you telling me?" I tried again. He lifted my hand and gently pressed his lips to my knuckles, butterflies filling up my stomach once more.

This time he gave an answer but not the one I was looking for.

"Everything." He whispered against my skin.
