INFINITY WARS SPOILERS. OPEN QUESTION FOR ALL READERS So here's a question. Thanks killed half of the Asgardians, killed half of Gamora's people, and likely half of the Xandarians as well as many other unnamed potential planets. Would the snap have soared the remaining from each of these world's/people, or would the snap have cut their numbers in half again? You'd think Thanos and his crew would know about Asgard's decimation if he also knew somehow that Loki had the tesseract. If he's truly dispassionate about death as a means of culling the herd, you'd think he'd spare what's left of the Asgardians, no? A population cut in half would repopulate to their original population within 2-3 generations. Thanos probably expects to snap his fingers every 20 years or so. Unfortunately, exponential growth cannot be sustained forever and has been plateauing for many decades. In accordance with the Sub-Replacement Fertility (SRF) equation, the standard 2.1 children per family must either be met or surpassed. Given the empirical data from most developed and developing countries, the majority of families are well below the standard. This has given a massive plateau to population growth and has shown signs of declining. There are vast economic, political, and social reasons (variables) as to the decreasing population growth. Given the high numbers of international migrants, the population density in developed countries (i.e. United States of America) has maintained standard levels. The subsequent public policies have been amended in order to maintain that proportioned of working-aged individuals in order to maintain GDP and economic stability/innovation. Given Thanos has been focus on "planetary populations", he will not have to worry about population growth for more than 2-3 generations. |
