Information About the Cherished James Potter

Canon:

James Potter (March 27th, 1960 – October 31st, 1981), also known as Prongs, was a pure-blood wizard and son of Mr. and Mrs. Potter. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1971 to 1978, and was sorted into Gryffindor house. There he became best friends with Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew; together they created the Marauder's Map. Also during this time, James played Chaser for his house's Quidditch team. During his seventh year, James was Head Boy and began dating Lily Evans, whom he later married. Together, they had a son named Harry. James, Lily, and their friends all fought in the First Wizarding War as members of the Order of the Phoenix; he and his wife defied Lord Voldemort three times. However, James and Lily Potter were forced to go into hiding after a prophecy was made concerning Voldemort and their infant son. Tragically, James and Lily were betrayed by one of their friends, Peter Pettigrew, to Voldemort. James was murdered by Voldemort in 1981, along with his wife, while they were trying to protect their son. James briefly appeared again through the Resurrection Stone for Harry, along with Lily, Sirius, and Remus in 1998.

After graduation, James married Lily, and Sirius was best man at the wedding. The three of them, along with Remus and Peter, joined the Order of the Phoenix, in the fight against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. In 1977, he and Sirius were involved in a motorbike chase with two Muggle policemen. Although the chase started off as a bit of fun, it turned slightly more serious when the pair were attacked by three men on broomsticks. Sirius and James used their wands to raise the police car that had been chasing them, and their attackers crashed into it. During the course of the next three years, James and Lily defied the Dark Lord three times, as the war continued.

James inherited vast fortunes from his affluent parents, and was able to comfortably support his family without the need for a paying job. James also used his wealth to support Remus, who was unemployable due to his status as a werewolf.

On July 31, 1980, Lily gave birth to their son Harry James Potter, but it wasn't long before Albus Dumbledore found out that they were in grave danger. Young Harry had become a target of Lord Voldemort, because of a prophecy concerning the one who could ultimately defeat him for good. Voldemort had learned of the prophecy through his follower, an old enemy of James, and the former best friend of Lily, Severus Snape. In October of 1981, Dumbledore told the Potters that their best chance of remaining safe against Voldemort was the Fidelius Charm. James insisted on using Sirius as their Secret-Keeper, even though Dumbledore himself had offered to fill the position.

Sirius, however, had a different plan. He convinced James and Lily to use Peter as their Secret-Keeper, with Sirius as a decoy. They agreed and the charm was cast in secret, but this attempt at a double-bluff ended in tragedy. The only people to know about the switch were James, Lily, Sirius, and Peter; even Dumbledore and Lupin were kept in the dark. Less than a week later, Peter betrayed Lily and James to Voldemort.

When the Dark Lord arrived at Godric's Hollow on October 31st, James told Lily to take Harry and run, and stood to face the darkest wizard in a century on his own in order to give his wife and child time to escape, but leaving his wand in the living room, where he had been entertaining his young son with it. Voldemort murdered him with the Killing Curse.

James was a tall, thin man who wore glasses, with hazel-brown eyes and untidy black hair that stuck up at the back. His son, Harry, was constantly noted to look very much like him, having the same untidy hair and eyesight, but the shape and colour of his eyes were identical to those of his mother's.

James was a clever and talented wizard, but very mischievous when he was younger. He could be arrogant and boastful, and even bullied other students on occasion, particularly his long-time rival, Severus Snape. However, he ultimately grew out of this, losing some of his arrogance and becoming enough of a responsible student and leader to be Head Boy in his final year, and later a member of the Order of the Phoenix, though he never entirely lost his rebellious side. James died bravely sacrificing himself for his family. Despite being a pure-blood, James disagreed strongly with the concept of blood purity, and was disgusted with any prejudice towards muggle-borns. In addition, he was not prejudiced against werewolves, such as one of his dearest friends, Remus Lupin.

Fanon:

James is often characterised in fanon as an arrogant git who cares nothing of anything but himself, and, though he claims to love Lily 'more than life itself,' seems merely to love stalking her or obsessing over her. And then, suddenly, he stages a personality turn-around in seventh year; now, he is a mature Head Boy whose favorite is tutoring first years and being an all-around wonderful person pastime and sweetheart. Though these characterisations may have their bases in canon, James was not such an extreme character.

James is often portrayed as being brilliant in Transfiguration, and sometimes in fanon he tutors Lily in this subject and she in turn tutors him in Charms.

Are You Planning on Writing a James/Lily Fic? Here are some helpful hints on what to avoid:

If you're thinking of writing a Lily/James fic, here are a few helpful reminders:

Avoid

Many authors tend to write Lily/James' badfic (a predictable, full of bad grammar, annoying, and unoriginal fanfiction) by having:

Lily be an Animagus;

Lily have three friends who enjoy pranks and entertain a rivalry against the Marauders;

Lily look perfectly beautiful and flawless, and impossibly brilliant (sometimes even a Veela);

Lily have three equally beautiful and flawless friends who happen to fall for the three other Marauders;

Lily be a suicidal emo or cutter, a state from which James rescues her;

Lily have an abusive boyfriend/family, from which James saves her;

Lily be raped by Death Eaters during a Hogsmeade visit;

Lily think of herself as (or actually be) rather ugly and/or extremely fat, until one day she decides to change;

Lily have a pet unicorn, or any other equally cutesy magican creature (sometimes a snowy owl);

Lily be a famous singer or dancer;

Lily be extremely talented at Divination.

The odds of any of those facts being true are extremely low. If any ideas of yours involve the above plotpoints, try to think everything through. It would be extremely difficult to come up with an original story starting from there.

Both Lily and James are portrayed sadly often as a Mary Sue and a Gary Stu, respectively. Please read those articles in order to avoid such faulty characterisation.

Reminders:

About Lily

According to Professor Flitwick's statement, James and Sirius were the most intelligent students in their year (PA10). Lily was undoubtedly smart—she did become Head Girl, after all—, but the boys were brilliant. There has been no mention of Lily as a "wonder" of any sort (except for Potions - HBP4)).

Lily's intense disgust at seeing James bullying Snape doesn't seem to be rooted in the fact that she's a prankster herself. In fact, all canon evidence points to an entirely different direction. J. K. Rowling has, however, indicated that Lily was not entirely against rule-breaking.

Although Lily throws the insult in Snape's Worst Memory, it is unlikely her sarcastic preference for the giant squid was a reccuring theme in her relationship with James. Similarily, it is unlikely she used the phrase "arrogant, bullying toe-rag" more than once. It is more likely she was, at the least, creative enough to come up with new insults every time.

Harry has no godmother. It's likely that Lily kept few close friends during and after Hogwarts and that, at the end, she ended up being restricted basically to the three Marauders, and perhaps a few Order members.

Lily agreed to have Sirius as the godfather to her only son, and both Sirius and Remus seem to remember her fondly. Don't forget that she probably built a solid friendship with all three of the other Marauders—yes, all three. If Lily had ever had suspicions regarding Peter's character, she would not have accepted him as Secret Keeper.

About James

James is a good guy. Despite his portrayal as a bully at the age of fifteen, we all know he's a good guy. If you choose to make him an abusive boyfriend to Lily, please think this characterisation through, and take your time to explain and establish it.

James is not very likely to burst into tears or sink into heavy depression for days at the slightest dismissal from Lily. He is also not very likely to have been "in love" with her since they first met; they were eleven, and most people do not fall in love quite so young.

He doesn't have to run his fingers through his hair all the time. It's a habit of his, everyone's aware of it, but don't overdo it. He also does not need to have a Snitch with him at all times.

Despite his playing with the Snitch in Snape's Worst Memory, J. K. Rowling has indicated that James was a Chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

ames probably treats the three Marauders differently, even though they are good friends. Sirius was the one chosen to be best man at his wedding, godfather to his son, and was their first option as Secret Keeper. It's possible that he shares different levels of detail about his relationship with Lily with the three of them.

Yes, James played Quidditch and he loved it, but being Quidditch Captain was not what his life revolved around.

James was extremely intelligent, but he was not light years ahead of Lily in terms of magical knowledge; he most likely did not care about being the best in all his classes--though he undoubtedly did well in them--because this level of commitment would not be conducive to other endeavors, such as becoming an Animagus or creating the Marauder's Map.

About Harry

When describing Lily's behaviour as a pregnant woman, do some research on the subject. For instance, not all pregnant women feel heaps of symptoms indicating that they're expecting a child. Morning sickness, heat waves, irrational food cravings and mood swings and others are common, but not mandatory.

Baby Harry was fifteen months old when his parents died. At that age, he could probably already walk, climb furniture, eat when given food to hold (but probably not with a spoon), say a few words—most of them not with perfect enunciation—, recognise Lily, James, the Marauders and other close friends of the family; he could call them by name. He already had a developed sense of humour, laughing and/or clapping when he found something enjoyable. He also complained when left alone, or when his parents left the room. Around this time, he'd start having nightmares and troubles due to growing teeth.

When writing a fic involving him, it's a nice touch to know what he could actually have done at that point in his life. As the paragraph above makes clear, it's impossible for Baby Harry to, say, point at the approaching Dark Lord and say "Voldemort". He could certainly, however, call the three Marauders by their names; in all likelihood, he knew them as Moony, Wormtail and Padfoot, or the baby-talk equivalent of whichever he was by then unable to say properly.
