![]() Author has written 11 stories for Harry Potter. Hey you all. I hope you all enjoy my stories. I am mostly into writing harry potter fanfics. These books are the only series that I have read enough times to write a detailed, good fanfic about. I, like most people here, love reading. So good book suggestions are always welcome. I am a major 'Marauder's era' fan. I have read all the good ones so feel free to ask for recs. You can also follow my blog - Dear Diary for my non-fanfiction stuff. Tumblr : Professional Pen Thief That's all for now. Cheers . Things to never ever do while writing a James/Lily fanfiction. Remember that cool, loud, fun, full of life OC you were planning; the one who ends up with Sirius. The one you were going to kill in the later chapters, Kill her now. Don't mention her. Throw her from your story. She will ruin it. Remember Peter, that shy sweet boy who was best friends with the Marauders. Yeah, I don't either. Because he just wasn't there in your Fanfic. All I read was a boy who looks horrible, who barely passes, who tags behind the Marauders even though he isn't wanted and ends up being dark and twisted. Also, Sirius somehow really really hates him. Yeah, that wasn't the character we were given. Peter is a marauder, write him as one. So remember that time when this guy asked you out every 10 minutes even though you rejected him countless times because he had no self respect or dignity; yeah, well that boy isn't James. James didn't beg; he asked lily out with a smirk. Werewolves are prejudiced against. Remember that alright because somehow it doesn't seem fitting that everyone figures out about Remus and yet he gets 0 hate. Parties; so many freaking parties. Christmas Ball, New years party, Easter ball, End of the term dance, Birthday's, Slughorn's dances. They studied at Hogwarts, not partied. While doing the inevitable New years party that takes place at James or some other Pure-Blood's house where hundreds of people are invited (including aurors) don't have Voldemort gate crash it. Too cliche'. Also because you won't be able to resist it; when Voldemort does gate crash it, don't make people send for help because for Merlin's sake, the party includes a room full of Aurors. Find better adjectives while describing Vernon because Petunia's whale/walrus of a boyfriend/fiance'/husband is used up. That scene when Lily gets into a duel and James asks her to not join the Order because he can't watch her die; delete it right now. That's stupid. James and lily were far more dynamic than that. And Lily wasn't the one to sit back and let James play knight in shining armor. So Dumbledore goes and calls the particular group of friends we've been reading about for no particular reason and asks them to join the order of Phoenix; officially after they graduate of course. They're 17 and his students; he could be sued. So, Sirius has a girlfriend (that OC you kept even though i told you not to because you figured you could keep it different) and James is of course meant for Lily (they just don't know it yet) so now its time to give Remus a girlfriend. And she has to be lily's friend. And now the two friend groups spend all their time together and inevitably James and Lily get stuck together a lot and fall in love. Pfft.. (Again, you forgot Peter.) The Hogsmeade sneak outs; once in a while is okay. Fred and George did it too but I hardly think the Students spent 3 days of a week at Hogsmeade. And in case you've forgot; there were only a few trips to Hogsmeade not every weekend. The bonfire night, the masquerade ball, the singing competition and anything along those lines; throw it out- NOW. Did they happen to Harry. No, then why would Lily and James year be any different. Paddsi, Prongsie, Remy, Petey, lilyflower, Si-Si, Jamesie; get better nicknames or stick to canon. Lily is so hot, everyone loves her and she's got the perfect figure and the perfect grades and every guy in school is mad for her. Or she studies all day and she's a bit of a prude who wear baggy jumpers and full jeans (Muggle clothing ?) and is stuck in a book and yet everyone notices her and is dying to asks her out but they actually just want to get in her pants and its only James who genuinely loves her. No, that is not done. James wasn't a player; Sirius was. So don't make Sirius in love with OC/ Marlene Mckinnon while Lily doesn't go out with James even though she has feelings for him because he's a player. Sirius was a player. Keep him single or make the story very very believable because fanfiction isn't about writing your fantasy about Sirius Black. That scene where Lily and James cast a patronus and theirs resemble and ooh, Lily realizes Potter is her soul mate/ she is so confused she avoids him is over done. Just don't show their patronuses. Mary sues are bad, OC Mary Sues are even worse. Lily walks into the heads compartment, sees the head boy badge on James and - "Dumbledore's gone mad!" or "POTTER! YOU STOLE THE BADGE" or Lily just straight up screams at him for a being the head boy, that bastard. First of all, c'mon, I'm sure they know who their respective partners are so they can prepare for the meeting in advance. Also, she wouldn't scream at him for no reason. I don't know where you get your information from, but Lily was a sensible rational person who lost it only when James made the first aggravating move. After the screaming match, during the heads meeting two things happen- a) "Oh my! Maybe Potter isn't so bad." or "Maybe he has changed" (because one good meeting is a sure sign of change, no?) or "How did he run the meeting so well when I who have been meticulously planning for this role since the day I was born messed up?" (I dunno Lily, ask the idiot who is writing your character.) or "Hmm... Potter has grown even more handsome over the summer. Those quidditch practices sure turn boys into greek gods"b) "Argh! POTTER (notice the caps) wasn't contirbuting to the meeting because he doesn't want to do this job. Nothing to do with the fact he hasn't been a prefect, he has no idea what to do or maybe he knows how much more prepared you are wants to give you your space." Oh no Potter, the despicable jerk. That scene where Lily complains about Potter and her friends exchange knowing glances and proceed to convince her that her frustration has nothing to do with his bullying but everything to do with her messed up heart and suddenly, Potter becomes charming and not to mention, HOT and bam! she falls for him. While you are writing that, you are simultaneously making me throw up. When James finds out about his badge, why does Sirius always whine because 'First moony and now you too Prongsie. Where have our maraudering days gone?" Why can't be genuinely happy or proud or something? "Oh, I have matured. I have to mature for Lily. Let me be mature. Wait, let me learn maturity from Moony because he is mature. Wow, that thought was mature. I am so smart but no, no calling myself smart, that isn't mature. Let me ask moony for tips on 'how to be mature'. Maybe he even has a book. Oh the things I do for Evans." thought James while staring into the sunset from his big big mansion that will make Lily gasp when she first sees it. If you follow me on tumblr, I have a whole rant dedicated to this nonsensical train of thought. No human had a one track mind like this, we are more complex than that. I'll keep on adding things to list so that you may refrain from making the same Marauder mistakes that have been made a billion times before ;) Note: Do not read 'Twists of Time'. Honestly, I started writing that when I was just finished reading 'The Life and Times' and I was going through major emotional crisis wherein I couldn't find a fic could enough to match those standards. So I decided to write it. I failed, miserably. I ended up taking the super cliche' path to a James/Lily story (I didn't even know it was cliche') and while my writing standards improved majorly towards the last couple of chapters, its still bleargh. The above list is actually a compilation of the mistakes I made in 'TOT'. I am a much better writer now and if you want proof go ahead and read 'Home' or 'Better Man' or 'Belong'. |
