Because we all know it, if Arthur sentenced Merlin to death he would escape. He wouldn't stay because of some stupid sense of loyalty. Would he? A story written to mock.

Their friendship had always been like a game. And then Merlin's magic was revealed and everyone waited. Because they didn't know if it broke the rules of the game, but it certainly broke the laws of the game board on which they play.

Merlin and Arthur are attacked by a sorcerer while hunting, and Merlin is hit by a mysterious curse. Everything seems to go downhill from there, and Arthur learns something about Merlin that shouldn't be a surprise. No slash, rated because I'm paranoid.

Originally anthologized in "Sesquipedalian." After an attempted assassination of Prince Arthur nearly costs Merlin his life, Arthur decides to have a little "talk" with Merlin about his apparent longing to die for him.
