Again, I am multi-shipping friendly! My Pet Peeves of writing:
I absolutely DESPISE it. Battle writing is the core of violence/tragedy/gore/action related fan fictions. I've noticed many authors who try to portray a battle scene in a illogical manner and the whole story sets off when they can't properly communicate with the reader. There are generally many ways you can battle (verbal battles are also included) but here I'm going to take Pokemon Battling and human battling into account. Before knowing how to write good battle scenes, one must be familiar with good, two-three battle strategies. The many basic things battle writings (for humans) are dependent on are as follows: Who's battling? The people who're battling are an important part of the battle itself. When writing about who's battling, refrain from going to extremes all the time, e.g. a wrestler versus a kid. It's good to use a little imagination here, especially when the emotions of the particular character is being described. Characters with interesting back-stories tend to attract most readers. However, you can add a few insane yet favorable characters that fight just for fun. Write accordingly to the personalities of the characters. For example, a hasty person can't be calm during the battle unless and until he/she is a 3-dimensional character. Most people consider 3-dimensional characters as Gary Stu/Mary Sue's but in reality there is a very fine lining between them. Try not to over flow your battle scene/story with a lot of 3-Dimensional characters. Also, two people fight/battle when their motives/ideals or beliefs rival each other. This of course means that the two characters MUST have different opinions and personalities. On a side note, training with each other is not referred to as 'fighting' with each other; it's still called training. I suggest finding a good synonym for training. Fighting is a tad bit too strong... I repeat my statement again, don't go to extremes, choose your character personalities carefully and make sure there is diversity between the chosen characters. When are they battling?Timing is key. This is a very old saying. Same things apply to combat. A few writers, at times, forget about the possibilities of creating new strategies based upon what time of the day or night it is. Chose wisely what time your characters are battling at and for how long they're battling. After-all, they're human/humanoid beings and they need rest. Someone who starts fighting at night and keeps on fighting till noon won't be too energetic or clever. However, someone who starts a battle in the afternoon will be fresher and 'in the zone' compared to the one fighting at night-time. Humans need rest, that's the basic fundamental law of nature. We can't deny that. Try to write a battle scene while keeping the time and type of characters in mind. Where are they battling?Location is also a very important factor that battles rely on. Try not to set the terrain to a 'mission impossible' zone 24/7. You can either add tough opponents but a useful terrain or average opponents with a tough terrain. It also adds 'spice' to the story. If the environment is classy and well-described, the reader would automatically want to know how the protagonist/fighters will overcome it. Adding obstacles such as gangs and monsters could be useful in your battle scene. What are they battling with?Weapons are extremely important in combat. It can be either sword-like or gun-like. What-ever weapon the protagonist/character has reflects a portion of their personality. Also, know the anatomy, history and usage of the weapons before writing about them in detail. Like, you can't mention a ‘Benelli Nova Pump Shot-gun’ being used by a person in the medieval ages. A person with low endurance or weak precision can't even manage to hit a balloon with that. Personally, I suggest you learn more about Psychological Warfare. It's the more complicated out of all weapons mainly because not everybody can write about the usage of a psychological weapon... Why are they battling?Very few people fight for no reason. If you mention why the character will fight/have fought or are fighting, you'll receive a favorable response from your readers. By knowing why the characters are fighting, your fan fiction will sound more realistic. Try to give hints if you want the cause of the battle to be a surprise, but don't leave the reader guessing and thinking about why the two characters are crossing blades with each-other. It leaves a bad-impression and bores many people. Now that you know the five basic things for human battles, try sketching your fiction using these guidelines. First, decide your characters and their personalities, what weapons they yield, know when are they going to battle, where they're going to battle and why will they battle. You'll notice the change in your writing style as you make progress. Pokemon Battling Before learning how Pokemon battling works, get acquainted with a few helpful guides and rules about them: What is Pokemon battling? (Don't dive too deep into this. Learn how the bag, switching and training work.) Also, on a side note, in the anime pokemon CAN evolve in-battle where as in the games pokemon evolve AFTER the battle concludes. So, be careful and specify your battle writing type on the first chapter/Summary. How Mega-evolution works and what pokemon CAN mega-evolve? (Important if you include mega-evo's into your fanfic.) Basics of Evolution. Know your pokemon before dealing with them.Forms of battle: Full Battle, Contest Battle, Sky Battle, Double Battle, Triple Battle, Multi Battle/Tag Battle, Inverse Battle (pain in the behind .-.), Rotation Battle, Horde Battle/Encounter (Tad bit different. These are usually with wild pokemon).I'll refrain from entering the info about the wonder-launcher battle mainly because not many people prefer using it in their writing. Now, most pokemon battle includes extraordinary events such as an Empoleon being beaten by, let's say, a Diglett, which is highly unlikely. After knowing what pokemon you're dealing with you'll come to realize that: · Not all Pokemon can use different moves. · Not all Pokemon can get stronger due time. There are certain logical restrictions in battle. Willpower and bonds aren't the only factors which matter.Learn the different stats, weaknesses, resistances, moves and any other factor that affects Pokemon battles. If you're unaware about move-sets/abilities than go online and browse about abilities/moves, how they work, for how long they work and what they look like. Don't use crazy moves unless it's either mentioned in the games/anime/manga. Like, a Litleo can't learn Iron-Head or a Pikachu can't learn Ice-punch (or even thunder-punch). When pokemon use moves that aren't specified or aren't legally used by them in any anime/manga/game or source, it counts as God-modding. Try to be logical when giving moves to pokemon. Refer to Bulbapedia/Seribii or any other authentic website when you need help or ideas about the different Learn-sets and moves. Teaching one pokemon a whole lot of moves at once is also unrealistic. IF you're giving your Pokemon special abilities or extra moves, mention them before hand in the summary or in the story. Baby pokemon, or newly hatched pokemon that learn more than 4 OP moves is just ridiculous and a clear example of amateurish battle writing. If you're using the anime style battling, then keep notes about what level each pokemon is at to make things easier for you. An example of bad battle writing is when a Snorlax dodges a Frogadiers' Quick Attack, then after dodging, it instantly uses hyper beam on the Frogadeir. No, just no. The base speed stat of a Frogadeir completely drowns a Snorlaxs' speed stat and hyper beam takes a whole lot of time to charge. So, it's nearly impossible for a Snolax to react THAT quickly and charge a really strong move in a matter of seconds. Yes, if you carefully chose the pokemon and give hints that it's being exceptionally trained then go on ahead and show the world what that Pokemon is made off but please be careful when 'serious' situations approach. Here are the rules for the Anime/Manga Poke-verse battling/captures: Anime/Manga: Pokemon can evolve/learn moves mid battle and use them immediately. Accuracy depends entirely on the reaction speed of the adjacent/ally/opposing pokemon and the attack power of the active pokemon. Pokemon will not always do as their trainer says. They take their own decisions in battling. If the pokemon trainer is unable to decide the next move, the pokemon has full liberty to act in accordance to its own instincts and carry out the battle. Of course, this is not necessary, but it is possible. Pokemon can disobey the trainer. Pokemon can have 'mood swings' and go either rash or merciful in battle, i.e, they have variable natures. The strength of the trainer does not entirely represent the strength of the pokemon. Pokemon speeds and strength vary accordingly to their size. It is possible for the pokemon to eat an item, dodge and attack at the same turn. However, this is only possible for high level pokemon or a weak pokemon against a REALLY weak pokemon (e.g, Ponyta vs caterpie). Pokemon can combine two or more moves to make a really powerful attack if trained right. Though, you should consider the nature of the moves beforehand. Baby pokemon CAN NOT defeat a highly skilled pokemon who's ready for battle. Abilities are applied just as they are prescribed in the games. Terrain affects the pokemon. A pokemon such as steelix can't use Physical attacks flexibly/comfortably in a really compact room. This in turn affects the power of the pokemon move as well. Weather has a serious affect on most pokemon. Trainers are allowed to change the move if their pokemon can act fast. After the pokemon faints, to prevent serious injury, the trainer HAS to recall the pokemon to its pokeball, or take the pokemon out of the battle field. The opposing side has all right to attack the pokemon after it has fainted if it's not an official battle. The age of the pokemon does not reflect their evolutionary stages, but, it does reflect on their efficiency of battling. By this, we can conclude that the age of a pichu can be older than that of a raichu. This also means that the pichu can be supposedly slower than the raichu, but stronger by the strength of its attacks. Unlike the games, legendary pokemon captures are very rare. In fact, it is very hard to catch a legendary pokemon in the games. The legendary pokemon that roam the world of pokemon have a low population, which in turn justifies the fact that not everybody can have 6 Zekrom on their team... Arceus is only one of its kind, as there is no mentioning of another Arceus in the anime...A regular trainer can't possible have two Arceus on his team. Legendary pokemon sightings are rare in the world, but yes, the legendaries are often spotted by even the common folk. A legendary pokemon that is specially known to reside in a particular area is not likely to be found roaming around somewhere else except that territory. Catching a pokemon depends on whether the pokemon has fainted, the strength of the poke-ball or if it has willingly accepted to join the trainers team. Unlike the games, it is possible to catch a pokemon after it has fainted. A pokemon using 7 moves at once is just wrong. Please be careful on what attacks your pokemon execute.2. When the possible becomes the impossible and vice-versa without any valid reason. The title says it all. Like, a Zekrom CAN defeat a level 54 Magikarp but then the writer shows how well trained it is, how it takes a full electric attack and how it still has the power to defeat the legendary. These situations are like POISONED SPIKES THROUGH THE HEART to a person who likes to analyze battle scenes. 3. No proper warning. The summary didn't mention that there will be content that is unacceptable to some users and the poor readers go through the fic only to end up with rotten moods. Other than that, there are situations which include mentioning that the story will contain Shipping A but surprisingly it's flooded with stuff about Shipping B. I hate fan fictions with no proper warnings... Example of Good and Bad writing; includes tips on how to fix such errors. Hey, want to ask any other questions? Then feel free to PM me! Let's have a good conversation together, I don't bite :P Also, I appreciate a good conversation when two authors brainstorm about ideas for potential fanfics, and I always look forward to helping others. |
