You don't know me, you likely never will. By day, I am an author somewhere on the 'Net. By night, I am The Fic Avenger. My mission in life? To root out the really, really, REALLY awful fanfiction here on Fanfiction.net, and try to rid all of us from the abuse bad fiction inflicts upon us. It is my hope that stories I review will either mercifully disappear, or be rewritten by the author, and in that case, hopefully become MUCH better stories. I cannot be everywhere at once, and I will not see every single piece of bad fanfiction there is out there, but I will act when and where I can. I may, on occasion, hand out praise in the future, to fics that are well-deserving of such praise. What saddens me as much as bad fanfiction, is to see truly good, solid, well-written fanfiction ignored. Or worse yet, unjustly assaulted by those who wouldn't know good fanfiction if it weighed five hundred pounds, jumped up, and danced the mambo on their heads in stiletto heels for a full twenty-four hours. (Big hint here... if the story has a stench that could obliterate weapons of mass destruction from here to Pluto and back again - that's baaaaaaaad fanfiction.) It is my intention to be as… tactful, shall we say, as possible, when I am reviewing a fic. There are a few instances where the kid gloves shall be removed, however. If you shamelessly character bash or assassinate, I shall not hold back. I have been seeing FAR too much of that going on of late, particularly most recently in the Pirates of the Caribbean fandom. Portraying Elizabeth as a spoiled brat, a wimp, or a witch with a “B” in her bonnet, making Will out to be an idiot, or someone who will throw away true love with Elizabeth just because someone else has batted their eyelashes at him cocettishly, Norrington as a hard-hearted and cruel jerk and/or idiot, Governor Swann as a heartless father… These are all examples of character bashing and assassination, depending on just what the author is doing to the characters. If you have someone acting out of established canon, then you’d better have a blasted good reason, one that is believeable and plausible within the confines of the world of POTC. Other examples in other fandoms include making Eowyn or Arwen out to be wimpy, or petty little divas (see the Elizabeth example) in The Lord Of The Rings, making Kat Hillard in Power Rangers out to be like that (Kat and Tommy were made a couple in PR, just because you might not like the pairing, that doesn’t give you the right to bash Kat)… There are many more examples in other fandoms, I’ve listed the ones above, since they are the fandoms I am most familiar with. If you bash a character or assassinate their personality without a valid explanation, I will call you on it. Unless the assassination is so blatant that there can be no plausible explanation for it, I will allow time for the author to explain their character’s actions and behavior with the telling of the story. (One such example is a story I recently found in POTC where Gillette is one of the villains. Until recent chapters, I was about to post a review lamenting the assassination of Gillette’s character. The author, in the telling of the story, has begun to reveal what has changed Gillette. If the author continues to make the change believeable and plausible in this particular fic, then I will be quite satisfied, for the rest of the story is a good read thus far.) If you violate one of the rules on Fanfiction.net, such as non-historical real person insertion (actors, singers, celebrities, etc.), or have an improper rating on your story (I’m not too strict here, but if you’ve got something rated “K”, and it’s clearly a “T” or "M", for example), deliberate duplicate posting of a story (I can forgive accidental easily), things like that, I will more likely than not report you. Especially on the real person insertions. I may or may not leave you a review to inform you of said report. If you are a repeat offender of a rule violation, or have removed a reviewed story merely to get rid of my review and/or others just because you didn’t like the critique(s), then upload it yet again with no effort whatsoever to try and fix the things that needed repair, or continue to assassinate characters for no reason whatsoever in other fics… Most likely, the kid gloves are coming off. Nothing will aggravate me more than the appearance that an author simply doesn’t care enough to do their best. I’m not asking for perfection. I just want folks to give a care about what they are doing. If I find that someone has been flamed for leaving an honest critique on a story for no reason whatsoever, I shall jump to that person’s defense if needed and warranted. My weapons of choice are the Swords of Honesty and Truth - and I keep those precious blades honed to a razor-sharp edge. I seek to avenge the innocent readers who have been unjustly assaulted by the horrors of bad, awful, truly HORRIBLE fanfiction. If I have reviewed you, rest assured that you have been given an honest critique of your work. The night calls me now... It is time to catch the guilty in the act. The Fic Avenger is always watching and reading... |
