My current fan fiction activity revolves around Hunger Games fan fiction. I am working on my first (!!!) story which I hope to begin posting in a few months! I got started with fan fiction way back in 9th grade when my best friend introduced me to O-Town fan fiction. That was back when FF.net still allowed you to write about real people... We would each follow a few stories that were regularly updated and fill each other in on the school bus each morning. I may or may not have dabbled in Nsync fan fiction, but O-Town was my bread and butter. After a month or two we had moved on to other forms of entertainment. One evening in 12th grade I got curious about my fan fiction past and returned to FF.net, but what did I care about now? Gilmore Girls. I followed a few stories for a couple months (mostly Trorys) but again, soon moved on. When I was a sophomore in college, I was running out of procrastination material an, on a whim, moseyed on over to FF.net. What did I care about now? Ehh, more of the same. Read Gilmore Girls fic for a couple weeks, but couldn't get into it. The summer between college and grad school I read the Twilight books. As soon as I finished Breaking Dawn I read what was available from Midnight Sun but was devastated when it abruptly ended. What's a girl to do? Find a fan fiction that finishes it, obviously. I read a few endings to Midnight Sun and a few of the other books from Edward's POV. Very soft, very cannon, no big deal. But then I moved off to grad school in a new town where I didn't know anyone AND it was still summer so classes hadn't started yet. Recipe for disaster. I spent an unhealthy amount of time reading Twilight fan fiction. At first I only read more cannon stories, but before too long I had migrated to AU and All Human stories. Despite classes, research and a healthy social life, I managed to spend a shameful amount of time on Twilight fan fiction throughout grad school. I always wanted to write a story, but could never come up with an original idea good enough. Seriously, EVERYTHING has been done in the Twilight fan fiction universe! I read the Hunger Games books during the summer of 2011 and was instantly hooked. However, I still needed to finish my thesis so I could officially graduate and resisted fan fiction for months. I had severed my ties with Twilight fan fiction a few months before reading Hunger Games and had no business going down the fan fiction rabbit hole again. But of course one day I caved. Started with Katniss/Peeta, moved to Katniss/Gale and the settled on my favorite pairing - Gale/Madge. I love Madge! Unfortunately, I believe I have exhausted the Gale/Madge on this site and since Madge isn't going to be included in the movies, I'm not expecting to see many new stories. (Seriously people, we need to write more!) I was surprised at first at the differences between the Twilight and Hunger Games fan fiction fandoms. Almost all of the Hunger Games fics are set (more or less) in the universe created by Suzanne Collins. However, a very high percentage of Twilight fics use only human characters. It's been harder to follow many stories at once when the stories are so similar, but I enjoy the Hunger Games universe so much, it's hard to mind. |
