Harry Potter Stuff:

I've started a Harry Potter story, and since a lot of terms seem to be used interchangably, I decided I would define them for any stories I may write in the Harry Potter Universe. It's rather annoying to me to see people say things like jinx, curse, hex, spell, charm, enchantment, etc. for the same spell in different sentences. So, for all of my stories in Harry Potter, these are what each mean:

Jinx: a type of magic that could also be seen in having bad luck; example: the Tripping Jinx

Hex: an annoying or distracting type of magic that, while varying in severity, are mostly harmless and can be used as distractions or pranks; example: Bat Bogey Hex

Charm: a type of magic that passively alters an object, such as glamours, or cause an object to do something; examples: Disillusionment Charm, Animation Charms

Spell: a type of general classification of magic which can actually be referring to others, contains general use and elemental related magics; examples: Lumos/Nox, Incindio, Aguamenti; Note: spells usually stay active until the user stops the spell, otherwise Aguamenti would be a waterball rather than a stream of water

Transfiguration: a type of magic that changes one object, be it living or not, into a different object, be it living or not, and changing them back

Conjuration: a type of magic that is typically seen as part of Transfiguration and is taught in the same class but is actually different, where Transfiguration is the changing of one thing into another, Conjuration is the creation of one thing from "nothing" with magic(thing created is actually made by magic); example: Avis (Conjures a flock of birds)

Enchantment: a type of magic typically seen as a long lasting or permanent Charm, Enchantments can actually be spell or rune based and are always on objects but can degrade over time from extreme use of the enchantment or natural erosion of the magic sustaining it; examples: Brooms, Hand of Glory

Ward: a type of large area protective magic, most widely used on houses and can be preventative, passive, or offensive in their use; examples: Unplottable prevents the location from being known and is passive, Protego Totalum blocks things from crossing and is preventative

Curse: a type of magic which can be harmful in nature and is usually used to classify offensive capable magics, and can be both active casting and passive placing; examples: Reductor Curse, Cursed Necklace (the one that almost killed Katie Bell in HBP)

Counter-Curse: a type of magic which is generally protective in nature and is usually used to classify defensive capable magics, they either stop the effects of a Curse, block or reflect the Curse, or reverse the effects of the Curse, commonly used to refer to a Curse used to retaliate after receiving a Curse

And then, there are classes we have no clue what actually goes on in them, so here are my clarifications of them for my stories:

Ancient Runes: a class of magic utilizing symbols instead of wands to channel magic, used mostly for wards and enchantments, will first be taught the languages of the runes they will use, then the way to use them; runes are the individual symbols, rune sets are groups of symbols working towards powering a similar function, rune array is the entire amount of runes on an enchantment or ward, rune scheme/schema entire amount of runes on an item or ward stone and how the different arrays are placed to work together, rune map is for runic shapes made by ward stones

Arithmancy: a class of magic that is the study of numbers and their magical attributes, more advanced classes also learn about how it deals with wand movements, ward creation (requires Runes to also be taken), spell creation, and creation of magical items (might also require Runes being taken to be done)

Astronomy: a class of magic that is the study of space and what is in it, and how their positioning can effect spells, rituals, and magic; along with the study of seasons and how the environment and time of year can effect certain spells, rituals, and magic

This is fanfiction, so none of us own any of it, but I'd like to have credit for my ideas when you use them.
