Author has written 3 stories for Harry Potter. For my own reference, HP fanfic that I have liked : 1. One of Those Potter Nights - Montavilla : Archive: The Sugar Quill MESAYS : Characterization, POV of ppl who are left behind to clean Harry's mess. 2. Incarnate - FayJay : Achive: Fiction Alley (The Dark Arts) Link: Warnings ( author's): Written prior to HBP. Deals with death of a character. Also, cross-over with Neil Gaiman's Sandman books, though you don't need to know anything about that world to enjoy it. Summary: FututeFic. Snape summons Death, in a bid to return an old friend to the land of the living. MESAYS: Characterization. Is bittersweet 3.A Dozen Valentines For JKR - Fourth Rose : Archive: livejournal Link: Summary: As the title suggests, these are valentines written to JKR from various HP characters. MESAYS : Well, its just cheeky - u wont fall over yourself with laughter but what is amazing is way different characters write is actually IC - what they say is cheeky. 4.End of The Line - googlebrat () MESAYS: One of the best afterlife stories - it's the first in a series actually. 5. Happy Anniversary, Says the Vanilla Cake - fated_addiction ,Crown me king of horns, Cocaine rusts the blues : Archive : Livejournal There is a bottle of whiskey between them, old records in brown paper, and she can’t, for the life of her, remember if she really sent a letter. Lily believes that they could’ve almost been a tribute band. MESAYS: It does not follow JKR's Lily - she has a personality here. With the Decadence of chocolate and a dash of music. 6. 404 ways to annoy Snape - just too good. I love it. 7. Of All Sad Words of Tongue or Pen : Link : A tale of spilled drinks, broken bottles, and missed opportunities, in which Snape and Dumbledore share a bathroom encounter (but not in a sexy way), and it is conclusively proved that any problem at all can be solved by a nice cup of tea. MESAYS: One-shot from Snape's POV, the author does an olympic gold medal worthy balancing act between humor and angst. It is a brilliantly written piece- short, touching and yet leaves you content. 8. Hate to See you Go, Snape Family : Link : Young Severus prepares to go to Hogwarts. MESAYS: I've always wants a story where his mother is not the cowering broken woman and his father the ultimate abusive husband and father. Even though I do not completely agree with the author's characterization, I like it. It is one-shot - short and the last scene when Eileen leaves the station is subtly touching. 9. "The Alchemist " & "Once" & "Quiet Desperation"- Northangel24 : Archive : Deviantart : ; MESAYS : She does write the best SS/LE around, except maybe, for Eunike's Ananke . 10. "Switch" - corvidae9 : Archive - Livejournal : Link : MESAYS: Funny and cute series, of which this is the first one. Incomplete though and tends to get a little too sweet and friendly at times but good. 11. "Hogwarts staff meeting" - Inkwolf : Link : Summary : Hogwarts staff commission a series of books to be written to tide over financial problems. MESAYS : Good funny stories are so difficult to find and this is one of them. I have not read any other like this one. 12. The Boy Who Lived - Delphi : Archive : Livejournal : Link : MESAYS : No, I do not follow or have ever before, followed the ships implied. No, I have never viewed Dumbledore as depicted. But Harry and Snape - dead on. The fic made me wish to write one of my own and plagiarise it. Alas, the maximum I can go is quoting a few lines. I have never read a better or more apt description of Snape. Some people have a gift of writing and some others have the even greater gift of understanding characters and people. A cmbination can be deadly. "The young man is born into poverty, but he learns no virtue from it. He is ugly, but he is neither stupid nor kind. He is childish one moment and mature beyond his years the next, growing and regressing by whim. He falls in love with a young woman and pays courtly love when he should woo, and wounds when he should pay courtly love. He commits wicked acts with fair intention, and fair acts out of selfishness, and when he is forced to read poetry, he strips away the words and counts feet and caesurae until he has found the meter through mathematics, and those bare bones are all he admires." 13. "The Innocence of Snow" - Moira of the Mountain : Link : Summary : In the winter twilight, even Severus might be tempted. MESAYS : Found it recced on kia's recs @ mujaji's. It's not often u come across such pieces. It's a short piece (620 words only). Lyrical. It's almost poetry. Made me wonder why I cd never write like that. I love the entire piece except for the secondlast paragraph. The last line, the first, the lines in between - the art to say so much in so few words. It paints such a portrait - of someone shrouded in fog. That's the image that comes to my mind. Someone cold, someone you could never see clearly. I think Severus is best suited for lyrical pieces. There's that sense of mystery attached to him that transcends him from a regular character to a legend. 14. "Odysseus's Last Days" - amanda_r : Link : Summary : "He certainly hadn't predicted that the happy ending he'd dug out of the dirt, the blackness of his own self, the one he'd compromised so much for, would have dissipated with something as harmless as a plunge from a low bridge. Because it's not the fall that would have killed him. It would have been the sudden stop, or the rushing water, or a sharp stone to the skull, things that any wizard worth his salt could have got out of, if he'd wanted to." MESAYS : The story was recommended to me amongst others when I decided to get over my Snarry squick - always seemed too much like incest to me. It was totally worth it. I have rarely come across such quality of writing in Severitus inspired fics. It is a gifted writer who brings the readers to feel the same as the characters. You guess pretty early on what it is based - so much for presumptions. You never even realise it till it hits you, out of nowhere, catches you completely unaware, suspends you in disbelief, perplexes and confuses you, makes you wish to go over every little detail once again - what had you missed - and finally, forces you to accept it, however unresolved your feelings remain. You are rendered to the same position as the characters, left to wonder and question why? A masterpiece. 15. "Thine Own Self" - neon-humminbird : Link : Summary : in the days of Voldemort's first rising, six Slytherins must learn that what you are may determine your House -- but your House does not determine what you are. MESAYS : I am not much for stories which deal with Marauder era. Can't stand the self-righteous marauders, or Lily, for that matter. I suppose it helps that this story has as little of them as possible. They are incidental. The protagonist is an OFC and the Slytherin house. But even in the short piece, the author paints such a true-to-cannon picture of almost everyone involved. I loved the ambiguity of Snape, the lightness in Lily, the authority of Dumbledore, the clever viciousness of Lucius, but again - all these are incidental. The story belongs to Katherine, who embodies the true spirit of Slytherin with her independence, pride and practicality. Must Read. 16. Morior Animus- Vain : Link : Summary: That was his gift, you know? Happy endings... ” He wanted to believe that. He really did. But he knew better. MESAYS: Heartbreaking. |
