Thou shalt not wonder [Scratching the surface]

There isn't much to say about me. A PC/PlayStation gamer. I, like many others, strive to enjoy life as much as possible. Want to know more? I fear you're out of luck. You might try shooting a private message my way, if you wish, though you'd do well to remember there's no guarantee you'll receive a satisfying answer; nothing against you, mind, I simply don't like to talk about myself.

I decided to register on "FanFiction.Net" because of the story Duet of the Apocalypse, authored by CanisLupusHorribilis: it was a story mostly focused on the characters Leon Scott Kennedy and Ada Wong, with the Raccoon City Police Department (R.P.D.) serving as main location, so to speak; liked it enough to create an account and post a review, even though the story's author was long gone by the time I did that. Opted to stay active because why not, went through the hassle of setting up an account, might as well put it to good use.
Spent a decent amount of years on here, this website and some of its users unknowingly helped me through some of the worst moments in my life… Reading your stories, talking with you offered blessed moments of respite from the pain, sometimes. You probably won't care about it, folks, but I am grateful. I've been lucky enough to discover some of the most wonderful people here, to this day I think of them as friends, even though they might not feel the same way about me. Sadly, it seems most of my favourite authors became less and less active as time went by, or they dropped off the "FanFiction-train" altogether. Am I some kind of bad luck charm? Just in case, I don't really want to know the answer to that question. Now certain that I am a harbinger of bad luck, damn me; don't even know how I feel about all those on hiatus/halted/seemingly abandoned stories: saddened… Disappointed… Pissed off… Understanding… Foolishly hopeful. There are days when one emotion in particular stands above the rest, but more often than not, it feels like a maelstrom; you don't need to tell me stuff like: “Life is unpredictable”/“I ran out of inspiration to keep writing,” I can think of many more reasons to stop writing which are just as likely and legitimate, still, having bore witness to all those folks who promised to finish their stories no matter what and oft ended up leaving them unfinished, without any explanation at all left me rather… Well, let's keep things civil by saying I'd wish writers won't make such silly promises, for a start. Even getting a statement from the writer declaring “Story's dead”/“I no longer care about this stuff” would be an appreciated gesture, at least on my end, since you won't have folks hopelessly waiting for something which isn't coming.

Sigh. Enough of that, let's move on to slightly better things: if you have time to spare, do yourself a favour and check out some of the stories I have in my Favorite tab. Oh, keep your eyes on those authors, while you're at it; in case you indeed like what you read, please, let the author of that story know… Who knows, maybe some of them will rise from the grave to finish what they started, despite what I've said previously, one can always hope, right?
Whatever. I still lurk around and check private messages; to all the writers whose stories I've read: a heartfelt “Thank you,” I can't start to put into words how better you've made my life with the product(s) of your imagination, but know I'm truly grateful and wish you the best of luck in your endeavours. Lastly, if I've either favoured and/or followed your story, you can rest assured that I'm reading it: I may take a while with that task, and you might not always know when I have read your latest update, but I try my hardest to stick around.

Also, I've been asked quite a few times why I don't write fanfiction (some of the users I came in contact with suggested I should), so I'll try to explain why I don't partake in the fun:

- I don't currently have too much free time.
- English isn't my native language, I believe any "work" of mine would be riddled with mistakes.
- Any safe idea which comes to my mind has been already written by someone else (in a much better way, I might add).
- What's left to write about is pretty much certain to get my account terminated; I love to integrate stuff like rape, torture and graphic violence in the work I publish and sell, such a habit would surely carry over to my fanfiction, if I were to write any. I don't know about you, visitor, but I'm an adult and I happen to enjoy sex, therefore, I have no problems with stories containing well-written smut/lemon; I don't know why "FanFiction.Net" doesn't allow work with the MA rating, read about some kind of purge which happened years ago: apparently, stories which crossed some imaginary line got suddenly deleted by the website's staff, accounts got terminated and other users left because they weren't happy with the guidelines. I'm aware there are other avenues I could take, in order to post the aforementioned kind of work, but I don't really feel like managing different accounts, neither do I like the idea of censoring what I write just so I could post it here without repercussions; it's either the full package, or nothing, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't mean to say I will never write and submit something for your viewing displeasure, because… Huh… How does the saying go… Never say never; I just don't see myself writing fanfic any time soon. There you have it, folks. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Thou shalt not falter [General message to writers #01]

I personally believe that every writer is awesome, each of them should at least know that someone out there takes the time to read his/her work. After all, we readers have to be grateful to the likes of you, writers: you decide to share with others a "piece" of you, welcoming them into your fantasy and you're not stopping there. Depending on the kind of story you choose to write, you go and research information to make the characters more believable, you check your work for mistakes; you may even go to such extents as complete and multiple rewrites of chapters/parts, because you don't feel satisfied with them and would like to give your readers something which they may deem worth to read. I didn't mention what I think is the most important thing: you're offering us "journeys", the chance to see our favourite characters portrayed in situations/ways not yet (or, most likely, never) explored by their creators and owners. I have no right to do it, but I kindly ask you to not let complainers and harsh reviewers discourage you. While it feels like the whole world is against you when people get so vocal and rude, know that these people represent a very small margin of the people who appreciate what you are doing. The silent majority is still with you, and we try to be understanding of the difficulties that such work entails. It may not feel like it, but what you do makes many people happy. Of course, one can try to diminish it by dismissing it as "fanfiction" or "useless writing", but the fact remains that people derive pleasure from your work, and that is something to be proud of, such pride can never be taken away from you.
You make people happy, and that’s a noble end in itself.

So, for what it's worth… Thank you.

Thou shalt not argue [General message to writers #02]

Please, remember that fanfictions are completely unofficial products; while writers may use elements of a franchise/media provided "as is", the stories wherein they use such material haven't been endorsed by the copyright holders, thus, they have no validity at all. While you might find some of your favourite characters written exceptionally well (according to your opinion), don't be so quick to maul somebody because he/she didn't write what you wanted to read: for one, it's their story and secondly, anything which hasn't been documented in an official product/release is up for personal interpretation. Matter-of-factly, fanfiction ultimately amounts to a pile of made-up crap (varying in size); you are taking different fictional elements from an equally fictional product and using them for your own… Brain fart. Imagination is a powerful and wonderful tool, who are you to look down upon someone else's work? After all, what you posted on this website wasn't an officially licensed story, either…

It's labelled as fanfiction for a reason, Einstein!
