Asher is Max's only partner in the Wasteland, unwanted and unwelcome. He did not need luggage to carry around - another responsibility to worry about. Asher, however, proves she is more than a liability; and, to Max's chagrin, he finds himself loving her company. Perhaps he was going mad. Perhaps she would be the one to finally push him over the edge.
