Dr. Isles is brought to BPD while Detective Rizzoli is on leave, mourning the death of her husband. On her return, Jane is barely a shadow of the charismatic, fun-loving person Maura had heard so much about. Everybody assumes they know why this is. Maura becomes the first to learn all the reasons why, and is the first one who truly gets Jane Rizzoli. *TEMPORARILY discontinued :(

You could say the story began with a pretend prostitute and an over-zealous philanthropist. (In effect, maybe it did.) But the turning point wasn't until much later.
