Post-Answers In Blood. It's three years - three years Athelstan spends at King Ecbert's court - before Ragnar returns to England once more.

Every evening after work, Athelstan takes the train home. Usually he sits alone in a quiet unoccupied carriage, but now there's always a family there too and they're all very interested in him, particularly the gorgeous tattooed parents. Athelstan should look away or find another carriage to sit in, but he doesn't.

All his life Athelstan has suffered visions of odd creatures that no one else sees. As a result, he quit his priest training and began work as a book illustrator. Athelstan reflects on his faith and what happened during the pagan rituals at the Temple of Uppsala and Ragnar comes upon him while he is deep in thoughts.
