Bridger Canyon is the oldest rural zoning district in Montana, and has been protected from over-development since 1971 by the Bridger Canyon Zoning District. This covers approximately 70 square miles of land between the Bangtail mountains and the Bridger mountain range.

Bridger Canyon has an extremely low population density with zoning placing a restriction of one home per 40 acres. This allows for the large open space areas, and abundant wild life that Bridger Canyon is known for.
