Do you remember the good old days of fan fiction and fandom?

Do you remember those halcyon days way back in the 1990's and 2000's when fan fiction was just for fun and nobody cared about forcing some weird political agenda into everything and certain genres and pairings weren't attacked by whiny busybodies?

Do you remember when you could just have fun and write whatever you wanted and nobody cared if it was an AU or a Self-Insert or what have you?

Do you remember when fan fiction was truly about the enjoyment you got from being a fan?

The Fandom Grindhouse remembers...

This is The Fandom Grindhouse, and I am your host, the one and only John Boy Masamune!

Here at The Fandom Grindhouse, I will be writing and posting a new brand of fan fiction. I call it "Fansploitation" as an homage to both Fandom and the old exploitation films of the 1970's and 1980's.

Exploitation films were low-budget movies with a sensationalist bent, often either featuring taboo subjects (such as violence or sex) or they were part of niche genres and sub-genres (like martial arts films or zombie movies) or sometimes a mix of both, and the subject matter would always be depicted in a sensationalist and often exploitative way, hence the name.

Many of these exploitation films were seen as low-budget trash in the eyes of mainstream critics and audiences when they were released but some were appreciated later by nostalgic fans, including major directors like Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth, both of whom would make their own movies in the modern era that were deliberately in the style of these old exploitation B-movies.

And now I am taking a similar approach to fan fiction, an often derided aspect of fandom. We all know about those old fanfics we used to enjoy as teenagers that may not hold up to scrutiny today, but we didn't care back then.

Some of us were the ones writing those kinds of fanfics back then. They may not have been "good" in the mainstream literary sense but they were fun to write and we enjoyed reading them anyway.

Some of my Fansploitation stories will be AU fics based on the many different genres and sub-genres of exploitation films, midnight movies, and B movies.

Other Fansploitation stories will be nostalgic throwbacks to old genres and styles of fanfic that we enjoyed and were popular way back in the day, but have fallen out of style in the current era.
