Okay, let's get something straight:

LIGHTENING is the present participle of the verb "to lighten," and refers to the process of making something lighter in color. Lightening is the opposite of darkening, or making something darker.

while

LIGHTNING is a noun - it refers to the meteorological phenomenon that is followed by thunder.

And in case you didn't know:

DEFIANTLY means "rebelliously." As in "A short time ago Fred might have announced his opinions defiantly, but now his courage failed him."

while

DEFINITELY means "without a doubt." As in "She will definitely be here on time." It is also not spelled as definately.
