I enjoy good writing and view fan fiction as an extension of the originals. Most of the shows/books/movies I write about are because I want them to continue on. That's what I'm looking for here. I want to see the characters continuing adventures as if I were watching a new episode. I abhor character rape more than anything else (this is a literary term - look it up). So you won't see me ripping apart established characters by making them do things they would never do without a lobotomy, or writing spiteful stories about ones I don't like. I will call out people who are guilty of this, but I'll also let them know my honest opinions on whether I think their writing is any good. That is what we're all here for, isn't it? I also don't like pairing main characters with other members of the cast. In most cases, it never happened and that's what guest stars (or new characters) are all about. I have been writing since I was 12 and keep updating certain storylines to reflect sequels or transition one storyline to another set of characters. I'm a big Star Trek fan and have been ever since it first came on television (when I was seven years old - yes, that makes me a whopping 47!). I like the original and the final show best as I saw hope in both. It is my opinion that the studio heads at Paramount, with a lot of help from Berman and Braga, are what turned that hope into despair and brought about the death of the franchise. None of it was the actors fault. They can only do so much with the material they are presented. Farscape and Highlander (personal favorites), both Stargates, the original Alien, Tales of the Gold Monkey, One Step Beyond, Outer Limits, and a lot of other television shows and movies from decades past are favorites, but scifi will always be the top favorite. Current favorites on the home front are Rome, Stargates, Bones, and Supernatural (Sopranos if it ever comes on again - great writing). I loved Everwood because of the cast and the writing and how much it reminded me of Picket Fences and Northern Exposure, very mature, but with a lot of quirkiness, very human. I was fond of Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me, especially Rescue Me. Again, great writers make this show very human. I would have to say most of television has poor, unimaginative writers who just produce for the lowest common denominator (sitcoms, reality shows, need I say more?). My guilty pleasures are J.D. Robb and Michael Slade. I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to each and every Preston/Child creation months before it comes out. Special Agent Penderghast is the best. I don't believe age matters when it comes to writing. I have read some very good stories from teenagers as well as people my own age. I have also read some very bad stuff from all groups, signs of an undisciplined writer or an immature imagination, or both. When I feel comfortable enough to endure the inevitable criticism of the readers, I will post something. I am looking for specific things in your criticism. Structure, not keeping to the same tense, rambling, anything that makes it a difficult read. I want my words to roll smoothly off the page and am striving to make them better. In the meantime I will continue to read what's available and see if I can't find someone new who writes words I can see in my head, or someone who has a similar style to my own. |
