![]() Author has written 1 story for Naruto. Name: Around the web, people call me Rev I Don't much like the idea of having author's notes in the story proper (It's distracting and it kinda cheats the word count) but I also know that I enjoy reading about the author's thought process at times. Thusly, I have decided to write my author's note as sort of a diary here. Daughters of Moon and Sun Author's Notes, Chapter 0 I Don't Much Like My Main Character Daughters of Moon and Sun is essentially a retelling of Naruto with the key difference of having a character I once despised as the main character and protagonist, heavily inspired by the recent work Because I Love You - Chasing After You, by The Flare Blade. When I was younger I had the typical anti-Sakura views purported by the Naruhina community simply due to her place in the story as a seeming rival to Hinata's affections. However, as I grew, so to did I grow tired of "Sakura bashing"; point of fact, I grew tired of the concept of "character bashing" in general. The idea that an author was letting their personal feelings and biases about a character cause them to knowingly change how that character would act was world breaking to me. It took several really good stories where Sakura and Sasuke were extremely well utilized to really show me why they had value. Among those uses were Sakura as a genuine romantic rival to Hinata (See A Growing Affection by Xavon Wrentaile) and as a supportive sister figure for Naruto (As In Oblivious by PervyNinja, and Entwined by Love, Enslaved By Fate by Codaram). Sasuke himself is often either ignored, killed off as Orochimaru takes his body, or shown to be vastly worse earlier on than he is in canon. There are problems with Sasuke as a character, just as their are problems with Sakura as a character, but they're the kind of problems that fanfiction is suppose to either explore, or just outright "fix". Regardless, I only stopped hating Sakura about half a year back, and I still don't really like her all that much. I like her arc, honestly she fits my old English teacher's definition of a protagonist (the character who changes the most as a result of the conflict) much more than Naruto himself. Her problems stem from who she starts as. Sakura is easily the most outright dislikable character in Part I. She's a gender stereotype, thrown into a world where said stereotype would be killed for lack of muscle mass, attached to our main character as an antagonist, and wrapped in red and pink. Sakura is an unlikable character at the beginning, and while it makes her finishing point all the more impressive, it remains a barrier to actually caring about her for a non-zero percentage of fans. Fun Fact of This Note: The Name of this fic was up in the air until literally the day it was posted, when I received a message from my beta/best friend with a suggestion. Author's Notes, Chapter 1 What's My Name Again? Daughters of Moon and Sun is not the world you are familiar with. In my first chapter, not a whole lot actually happens. What little does happen is simple interaction between characters and establishing points to the differences in the world. What you may or may not have also realized, is that the first chapter shares it's name with Naruto's first episode. As does it share it's opening line. As does it share many of it's scenes. DoMaS is not the world you're familiar with, but hopefully, there's also a sense of familiarity. Fun Fact of This Note: The last scene of the fic ends weirdly in my eyes. That's because in the initial version, the chapter ended before the Hokage's visit(which is based on the Hokage's visiting the academy at the end of Naruto's graduation exam in the anime). Author's Notes, Chapter 2 What Does It Mean To Dream of The Future? Chapter two of Daughters of Sun and Moon ended up being a little shorter than I would have liked, but their wasn't a lot of story to tell. In fact, this chapter ends up functioning more like a bridge with the next than a chapter on it's own. I have a feeling that had I combined the next chapter with this, it would have dragged on far two long. What was actually interesting about this chapter was finding Sakura her own sense of... self. From a writing perspective I mean. Sakura as she is at this moment is a not yet formed person, and so is difficult to write as a character. Whereas her Teammates flow well, their goals driving them forward, Sakura struggles and drags her feet. Her first arc is an arc of awakening and discovery, but finding her and reaching that point are not an easy path. I must say, the most interesting part of this chapter to write was the introduction scene - which is appropriate as it's more or less the linchpin of the chapter. That was really the only place that Sakura flowed. An interesting effect when you remove Sasuke as her goal is that not much is left (which is arguably a primary issue with her in canon) but that empty space is now what defines her at this stage. I had a lot of fun writing Naruto and Hinata's introductions, with Naruto being much like his old self while still having changed and Hinata holding key differences from her Canon Counterpart, Sasuke. All things taken, this chapter was alright. Fun Fact of This Note: I had to manually reformat this chapter not once, not twice, but three times after upload. There was a lot of italicizing. I know pretty much every italicized word in the chapter. Also... Bloody. Page. Breaks. Author's Notes, Chapter 3 So this chapter took forever. Not really mind you, I actually finished it late November but a lot has happened since then and I put off the editing until mid January and it's posting until March. I really loved writing this chapter though, I went through three different outlines before I decided on how the fights would go down and I actually wrote all four fights from two perspectives. Before writing the version that is actually in the chapter, I wrote it from Kakashi's perspective to keep it internally consistent and giving me a frame work for what Sakura would perceive. This worked well I think and it also adds to future references to this fight. The chapter itself was... interesting to write. I wanted it to mirror canon at first but diverge towards the end and I think that went well. I think I need to get back into reading other FF as I've lost my muse for now though. Hopefully the next chapter will be out in less than four months. Fun Fact of This Note: I thought I'd lost this chapters outline twice (thus why I had to write three outlines) but had in fact just missaved it. Also, that feeling when you have to manually add words like "honour" to your word documents dictionary because you're not american ugh. Next Time on Daughters of Moon and Sun! "This team is the worst." "You're pretty cute when you're being introspective, you know?" "Teamwork is more than just working together! It's a promise you make to your comrades!" The Path Forward: Teamwork isn't supposed to be this difficult! |
