Summary: (Xenosaga) (Shoujoai) After the events in Episode I, the crew each go on their separate ways, one with a duty to fulfill or another with a life to live somewhere apart. Shion and KOS-MOS go on to work with Vector Industries. Junior once again pilots the Durandal under the Kukai Foundation. Chaos remained aboard the Elsa with Captain Matthews, Hammer, and Tony. Momo was placed under research and observation, with Ziggy by her side, like always. However, destiny brings these six companions back together with the most urgent and tragic of incidences. Momo is captured by Albedo, Junior’s maniacal brother and twin, for reasons they will soon find catastrophic to the existence of their world. At first, Ziggy makes his own personal attempt to rescue her, but he forgot about one small thing: KOS-MOS. She hears Momo’s cries for help, and with no time for an explanation, flees to her aid without notice. Shion panics when she realizes that KOS-MOS is missing, and, ignoring orders from Vector, she and Allen set out to find her. Through these strokes of Fate, the entire group is eventually reunited, and once again aboard the Elsa. As they sit back and relax, Shion can’t help but begin to question KOS-MOS’s programming, as well as the safety of the others. This worry only grows as it seems KOS-MOS is becoming more and more independent, sometimes outright disobeying Shion’s orders. So, fearing a relapse of the first KOS-MOS, Shion and Allen completely erase the remnants of KOS-MOS’s memory. All that remains is her basic data and programming, along with her self-learning system. Shion then fears that maybe this will have to be done periodically, just to keep KOS-MOS under control; an expensive and highly improbable solution. So, as a last resort, she decides to give KOS-MOS artificial emotions. Though this is a huge risk to her career as well as KOS-MOS’s existence – why should a killing machine have feelings? – Shion goes through with it, little by little. The weeks pass as Allen and Shion carefully piece together KOS-MOS’s new programming, and finally, they agree that she’s ready. Allen warns Shion that, due to the amount of delicacy and precision put into KOS-MOS’s new emotional programs, it may be a while before any of them take any affect; similar to her self-learning system. So, as they finally bring KOS-MOS back into the world, they find her as bland, cold, and emotionless as ever. At first, Shion begins to wonder if the emotions they installed hadn’t worked after all, because KOS-MOS continues to remain the same as the months go by. So close to giving up, she is preparing once again for another experiment on the android. However, Albedo reappears in the galaxy and is intent on going through with his plan, though this time, kidnaps Shion instead. He uses her as a hostage, and will only return her unharmed if the crew hands over Momo for good. Of course, they don’t agree to this, and go on yet another rescue mission. As Shion is held captive within the confines of Albedo’s fortress, she is not surprised to find that the one to save her is none other than KOS-MOS. What does surprise her is that the android, for that moment, looked truly worried for her creator. As similar events begin to occur, Shion can’t help but notice the hidden affection and fondness that KOS-MOS seems to set aside solely for her. Every day, Shion finds something new about the android, and realizes that KOS-MOS was never really that different from her emotional self. Can Shion awaken feelings within KOS-MOS that she never created artificially? Are they even sincere, or just man-made? Can Shion really learn to love an android more than any human? |
