Author has written 33 stories for Pirates of the Caribbean, Last of the Mohicans, and Once Upon a Time. I'm from the Midwest. We live by the motto if you don't like the weather, stick around. It'll change ... probably today. I write PotC. They're my favorite movies, with LotR coming in a close second. I have no background in Tolkien, though, so writing LotR fic is pretty much out for me. My favorite ship is W/E. I don't begrudge others their ships; however I am a discerning reader, so back it up. Even if Sparrabeth and Norribeth are loved to death, Will and Elizabeth share a love and have a history - deal with it in a satisfactory, believable manner. The one thing that strains my credulity so that it snaps like a rubber band is the absolutely ridiculous assertion that Elizabeth could never be "free" with Will. Please. Addressing Elizabeth's "freedom" and that she can't find it with Will, look at it again. Who gave Lizzie the tools she needed (swordsmanship, marksmanship, confidence) to be free? That would be Will. Who treated her as an equal, believed she could fight by his side, expected her to carry her own weight, didn't hide her away (remember Jack's "She's safe, just like I promised" as she was locked in the captain's quarters of the Dauntless on Norrington's orders?). That would be Will. Who saw her in her men's clothes and never said (completely sexist comment here) "It should be a dress or nothing ... I happen to have no dress in my cabin." That would be Will. Who gave her the gun and believed in her abilities and expected her to do her job, not like Jack taking the gun away and relegating her to clutching his leg like some damsel in distress while he played the hero, complete with the requisite haloing of the sun? That would be Will. Who believed in her as pirate king and had nothing but pride and confidence in her, unlike Jack exclaiming "He made you captain?! They're just giving the bloody title away!" when he heard she'd been made captain and Sao Feng's successor? Say it with me - that would be Will. Will treated her with respect and he treated her as an equal. Their's is the only truly equal relationship of the trilogy. Will believed in her, knew exactly what she was capable of, and gave her the support and the tools she needed to gain that much-vaunted "freedom" that many are so fond of saying she could never find with him. That's the way it is. |
