Only in art will a lion lie down with a lamb

and the rose grow without a thorn.

If you're reading this it must mean you're interested in learning about the writer behind the writing, and though I don't want to disappoint you in your mission, I am inevitably a boring person. You can call me Kayla, I'm still a teenager so bare with my through my ups and downs on this account; I have a passion for writing that I feel can outlive any other passion I currently harbor. Nice words, and constructive criticism is welcome with open arms in my mind. PM me if you want to talk, I'm always up for a conversation.

Chapter 1: "The first time I ran into him, I bruised him twice with my sneaker."

“Hey Ino you coming back in or what?” Sakura didn’t expect the boy that the voice belonged to walk around the corner at that moment, nor did she expect her shoe to come flinging off her foot at that moment either. The one thing she did expect however was to have the shoe crack the boy directly in the nose, because lady luck is evidently a bitch. A yelp could be heard from him as he staggered backwards at the impact, holding his face in his hands. Ino, like Ino always does began to giggle uncontrollably, and Sakura stood wide eyed with her mouth hung open in absolute horror. She just hit a stranger in the face with her sneaker. In between laughs, Ino spoke:

"O-Oh my god Naruto your, aha your nose is bleeding!"

Chapter 2: Indomitable

She just remembered, because remembering helped; especially when she was telling herself that her family, this family was the only thing she had left; which was not a tool to push her that last few feet into the clearing, it was not a way to keep her on her feet for her own self-preservation, rather it was the cold hard truth. Without them, she was nothing.

Which is why, instead of freezing as she watched the sword come swinging down towards Ten-Ten’s shriveled body in that field where she stood alone, cornered by two men on horseback Sakura ran, and she ran hard only to slip directly in front of the doe-eyed warrior, her face twisted in a defensive snarl. The icy feeling of the blade slashing across her cheek caused her head to snap sideways, it wasn’t deep –thankfully, but that exact realization that the dirt on the other end of the sword wasn’t aiming to actually hurt Ten-Ten, but to scare her is what put the final piece of the puzzle together for the young Gypsy.

After all, if she hadn’t have stepped in front of Ten-Ten the sword wouldn’t have even grazed the girl like it had for her. No, they weren’t aiming to maim, they were aiming to frighten.

Prologue

“Where do you want me to take her?” A rough voice spoke, Sakura continuously tried turning her line of sight but a hand was softly placed against the back of her head so she could only face the oak tree standing before her, the one that marked the border between Konoha and no man’s land, as her father had called it “Where Ninja’s go to travel on mission’s.”

“To the Sand, I’ve already made prior agreements. Keep her safe Huo.” That was her daddy’s voice, and she struggled endlessly, tears beginning to streak down her cheeks as she screamed for him. When the person who was holding her captive turned, she watched the back of her father retreat further and further away as she herself was being pulled in the opposite direction of the man she’d loved with all of her heart.

When he was lost from her sight, the smallest of whimpers passed her lips as she gripped the necklace that bounced against her neckline like her life depended on it “Daddy?”

“This is your new home now Sakura.”

“It’s really sandy, Huo.”

“It is, but it was your mommy’s most favorite place in the world when she was a child.”

“It was?”

“It certainly was, you’ll fit right in I promise.”

“Okay, I guess this can be home for now.”

“That’s my champ.”

“When are mommy and daddy coming for me, Huo?”

“Someday Sakura, you’ll see them again.”

The funny thing is, she never did.

Chapter 1: Reminisce

The Most beautiful thing I ever saw? It was stupid, and despite his knucklehead persona it was a bit out of character for Naruto to ask such a personal question. It probably had something to do with his new Psychology class he was taking at the College. I didn’t answer despite his constant poking and prodding, just shook my head and scowled. It’s what I do best, but now that I think back on it I can remember the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

A smile, and not just any smile but her smile. I can remember, as clear as if it were yesterday and not nine years in the past. She was famous for her fake smiles, the ones that were obviously forced, her lips pulling tight, her forehead creasing only to show off its unusual surface area. Or her smirks, now those pissed me off, especially when she was winning an argument and she knew it, or when she was right and everyone else around her was wrong; she was a little bit of a bitch that one, with a knack for being [or trying to be] perfect. Everyone said she was the top student, a successor if you will.

But there was this one day, a nice day with on and off showers. The whole town was a gigantic mud pile, and no kid in their right mind dared to take a step outside. Except for her, because she wasn’t in her right mind, and could never pass up a good dare. I, being a kid without authority, had been tracking around in my bare feet the whole day, relishing the empty streets and quiet day save for a few people running up and down the sidewalks with umbrellas. I watched her as she poked her head out of the alleyway I had been approaching, emerald orbs wide in joy and blossom hair sticking to her neck as she was soaked to the bone, again any person in their right mind would be furious at how cold and wet it was, and how long of a shower they’d have to take to get the disgusting smell of rain water out of their hair after the fact.

But she was smiling, it wasn’t fake, there were no creases in her forehead and there was absolutely no slight upturn of her lips in annoying triumph. Instead the corners of her eyes crinkled ever so slightly, and through her lips that where upturned in a giddy grin you could see a flash of perfectly white teeth as she looked to me, a small finger coming up to her lips indicating to not say a word about her being outside to her parents, I was too distracted to really notice though, because out of her mouth came the most melodic sound I’ve ever heard while her shoulders shook with the laughter, I couldn’t help but stop and just stare.

That is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

Chapter 1: Listen

Even if she did have to admit that run in with the harpy was scary, and she was lucky she’d made it out unscathed, she could already feel her heart beating a million miles per hour at the thought of returning. The empty cabin filled with cobwebs, the cold draft because there was no warmth to its space. She remembered that time two years ago when she was the first to walk through those doors after the cornucopia glowed gold above her head, casting an eerie light over her already golden hair as campers around her gasped because well… that’s a new one. But there was a cabin, there was space, and she had inhabited it for a whole summer with absolute distaste.

“Look, Cole I know you’re probable upset with me right now-“

“That’s a bit of an understatement.”

“I’m obviously not dad of the year-“

‘You don’t see me buying you a coffee mug with BEST DAD EVER written on it, do you?” The glower sent his way had him rolling his eyes in exasperation as they drew closer and closer to the airport.

“I want you to be safe.”

“The man who swaps liberty for security deserves neither.” The words tasted sour to her, but they had her father smiling and even she had to crack a slight grin.

“Are you quoting Benjamin Franklin at me?”

“He is our founding father dad.”

“You are the oddest kid.”

“You better send me my Christmas presents, because if you don’t you’ll have to turn into friggen’ flo Jo to get away from me.”

“Your presents already in the trunk, don’t you worry.”

“Already trying to redeem yourself, you’re the saddest creature.”

“Better safe than sorry darling,” and still no matter the fight, no matter the issue at hand she always found herself coming full circle and back into her father’s arms because she knew she couldn’t lose him like she lost Uncle Ted, she knew he was the only one that could keep the visions from returning… and that’s why camp, a place where he could not go, scared her the most.

Prologue

With sheer curiosity and the inability to stay still any longer her fingers reached upwards towards the crack and before they could actually feel the split they were opening, revealing a blazing light that momentarily blinded her, her mouth hanging open in surprise and shock as she shielded her eyes with a hand. The moaning and creaking was replaced with whispers, human whispers, and a sort of buzzing but soon she came to her own conclusion that the buzzing was coming from her own ears because the human whispering wasn’t whispering but loud shouting that had her totally confused and it was unbearable, because she couldn’t hear properly nor could she stop shaking and when arms grabbed her biceps and began pulling her from the box she hoisted herself up with her own momentum, but not without having to scramble for a foot hole; falling to her hands and knees in front of a group of human figures standing around her in a semi-circle.

Blinking back the black spots that where swirling in front of her vision she came to see faces, male faces all around her, some smiling, others frowning – especially the dark skinned boy who stood directly in front of her, but the majority just seemed confused, mouths hung slightly open in shock just as hers was. Mustering the courage that broiled in her stomach but could hardly bare to surface she stood slowly on shaky legs, hands clenched by her sides as her bottom lip sucked in so she could chew on it as she thought, which she figured must be out of complete habit.

The words she heard next scared her, caused her to jump in surprise after the hush of the crowd had almost calmed her to a sort of serene thinking process,

“It’s a shucking girl.”

Then and there the word Una slipped from her mind, basic laws of physics and air pressure fled her thoughts, the pain subsided into a dull throbbing and the only thought that slipped past her consciousness was,

What the hell does shucking mean?

Prologue

When she goes grocery shopping she buys exactly four of every fruit and vegetable because it’s her lucky number, every time Kaka-Sensei calls a training session Sakura sits with Naruto and Sai afterwards on the water bank by their training grounds, she watches Naruto swim and Sai draw and she just thinks and wonders and hopes. One time, Sai drew a picture of her thinking. The drawing is hung up in her room on a bulletin board filled of pictures from the time she was a Genin on.

She considers her friends to be family and her family to be friends, and no matter how many years go by she still thinks about him, maybe vaguely every now and then when something reminds her of her old team mate; but now instead of feeling sad, regretful and just plain angry at his absence all she feels is a strong sense of nostalgia, because she’s moved on, because there’s nothing she can do to impact someone else’s choice, and she knows that. So she lives her life to the fullest, as a daughter and friend, as chief of staff at Konohagakure hospital, as beloved pupil of the fifth Hokage and third ranking medic nin in all of Fire Country. She knows that she may just be one person, but she’s one person apart of so many others lives, whether she’s part of his or not no longer matters to her.

She is Sakura Haruno.

Prologue

She lived that life, the life of the girl with way too many secrets, a record filled to the brim with misdemeanors and so many fights under her belt she can’t remember half of them… or maybe that’s a result of being drunk during most of them. She’s the girl with baggage so heavy no one feels the need to carry it for her, the girl with cigarette breath, MIA mother and daddy issues. The cliché trailer park trash, and that’s what she settled for.

She lived that life with no conscious mind; making mistake after mistake until eventually she stopped calling them mistakes but her life style. She’s always had ice in her veins, and a slow beating heart and so she would kiss a random guy, get piss drunk, try new narcotics just to feel the heat coursing through her body, feel her heart beating so wildly it’s a wonder it hadn’t already beat out of her chest, and though every sensation she was feeling was physical and she had no feelings to actually feel, or emotions to encounter it was the only way to seem alive. Slowly she was turning into her father, and boy did she ever know it.

Still if it hadn’t of been for her father and his too obvious loose screws, she might have continued to live that life. Instead at sixteen she found herself being sent East on a 2 AM bus ticket purchased by the weird social worker who promised her better things than her father, who was the only better she’d ever experienced. Because of her father she grew up with distrust in everyone and everything, because of him she grew up with her own loose screws but a personality to top all others because underneath all that because of him she was just simple Annie Leonhardt, brilliant little Annie Leonhardt who endured so much yet pulled herself out of the rubble with nothing but resolution.
