In the late 1800's, further development of civilization led to the mass extermination of buffalo. The buffalo provided the indians with clothing and food, so the loss of these things greatly affected the Plains Indians.

The Battle of Little Bighorn was when the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians were outraged at Americans for disrespecting their tribe and land and went to war with America. One of the armies that fought against these indians was Lt. Colonel George Custer's army. His army went on to get slaughtered by the indians, and Custer was killed in the process.

Chief Joseph was a man of peace, and wanted his homeland secured peacefully. Thus, when the pressure of war became too much for him and his people, he surrendered. During his surrendering speech, he said he wanted to no longer fight.

Helen Hunt Jackson was an American writer and poet, later becoming an activist. She wrote a book titled "a Century of Dishonor", which describes many wrongdoings and injustices that happened to the indians during her era.

Geronimo and his tribe, the Apache, had to surrender in 1886, due the the lack of will to continue fighting. Not only was the tribe outnumbered, but the troops' drive to keep fighting was also diminishing.

The Dawes Severalty Act was to grant citizenship to certain indians. The act entailed that if and indian were to break free of the tribe and agree to the conditions that the act had placed, then they would be granted citizenship.

The Sioux tribe was outnumbered and surrounded by many US troops attempting to arrest and disarm them. The sioux felt hopeless, and still set on to resist the US. Due to this, the Sioux indians were slaughtered by US troops.

Synder act was proposed by Homer Synder. This act gave US citizenship to indians. It was signed into law in 1924.

The Wheeler-Howard act (also known as the Indian Reorginazion act) was put in place to give Native Americans certain rights. These rights were similar to the ones given to US citizens. This act was put into place in 1934.

Dennis banks was a Native American activist, and co founder of the American Indian Movement. This movement's goal was to ensure that Indians kept their rights and weren't discriminated against.

The Trail of Broken treaties was a series of protests that attempted to bring attention to all the discrimination and hardships that American Indians were going through.

The occupation of BIA headquarters was an action that branched off of the Trail of Broken Treaties protest. Members of AIM took over BIA headquarters to bring more attention to the cause of their protest.
