![]() Name: Liz Age: Late 20s Location: San Francisco Occupation: Editor Fandoms: Buffyverse, Firefly, Harry Potter, Narnia, Star Wars, X-Files, Doctor Who, Temeraire Favorite authors: Aaron Allston, Jane Austen, Lois McMaster Bujold, Jacqueline Carey, Diana Gabaldon, Elizabeth George, C.S. Lewis, Naomi Novik, J.K. Rowling, Timothy Zahn Why I'm here: It's been a long hiatus, but I have finally started writing again -- mostly in the Narnia fandom, but hopefully someday I'll finish my Harry Potter fics and post them here. I came here to read, though. I try to review any stories that I read and enjoy. If I click on your story and realize it's not going to work for me, I probably won't finish or review it. I really don't like putting too much criticism, even if it's constructive, in public reviews, so my comments might be vague, but feel free to message me if you'd like more details. I am a professional editor and might be able to do beta reads depending on my real-life workload -- alas, rent (and Internet bills, naturally) must come before fannish pursuits. Drop me a note if you're interested. Favorite characters: Right now, I'm mostly reading Narnia and Harry Potter, so I'll focus on those. In Narnia, I'm really drawn to the flawed characters -- Edmund is my favorite, perhaps because there's so much potential there for angst, redemption and grace. I like Eustace and Susan for the same reasons. Susan gets the shaft at the end of the series, but the older I get (and the more mistakes I make), the more I can understand why she chooses what she does, and I love reading about how all might be set right in the end for her. In Harry Potter ... I like Harry. He may be thick sometimes, and I wanted to shake him through most of OOTP and HBP because he was, well, acting like a teenage boy, but his heart is true. Neville, especially in Book 7, is also fun to read. And so many more: Fred and George, Ron and Hermione (I can't think of one without the other), Percy (did I mention I like flawed characters?), Sirius (no, really, did I?), Lupin, Tonks, Kingsley. I find Draco and Snape interesting in the right hands, though I guess that's true of every character. And of course I Love My Dead Gay Headmaster! Things I don't want to read: I'm a copy editor, so I spend 8 to 12 hours a day nitpicking, and I can't really turn that off. Grammar, spelling and usage mistakes really grate on me. If a story is riddled with them, I'm not even going to scroll down. I can overlook small errors in an otherwise good story, but that means maybe two or three per chapter -- not per sentence. I run screaming from Mary Sues. I'm not going to read incest or teacher/underage student. Slash is generally fine if you can make it work, just like het, but in either case, please don't go into much detail if you don't know what you're talking about. |
