One of the biggest reasons I love writing fanfiction is because it gives me the opportunity to practice my writing within a familiar and engaging context. I can work with character development, story arcs, plots, and other major areas using pre-existing characters, stories, and plots. It is by no means a replacement for creative writing in the original realm; however, it gives me the opportunity to fine-tune some areas I would otherwise not practice.

Currently, I am working on my multi-chapter piece, Return to Santa Barbara, featuring father!Shawn and his sons, Skyler and Liam, my two original characters. The reason I chose these names for his sons was as a tribute to the actors who played young Shawn in the original TV series. I thought that it would be a fun and creative way to name the characters in a way that made them still attached to the original show and storyline. While the story is AU, I am trying to think of the characters as they would have been in the future had the show gone so far. Of course, Shawn does not end up with Juliet (spoiler alert for Shules fans, though I do ship the couple in the original series), but he does end up the father I think I would have been had they ended up together in my story.
