Several months after the Battle of New York, Thor drops in for a visit with Loki at his side, asking to join the Avengers. This sets everyone on edge, especially Tony Stark who is coping with the aftermath of the battle rather poorly, and rejects the god completely. It's not until he realizes just how useful the trickster can be against a new enemy that he begins to warm up to him.
