I am a big fan of Phantom of the Opera. I am new to fanfiction but not new to writing. I could not resist the simple pleasure of writing down my ideas on one of my favorite stories. One of the questions that has always plagued me is actually from the book. It is a small passage where the opera managers interview Madame Giry. She tells them that the opera ghost is not alone but that he often has a lady with him. Some times he asks for a footstool for her feet and at times she leaves behind a fan or a glove.

Perhaps Gaston Leroux imagined that the leaving of these things was a small prank at Madame Giry's expense. I do not believe this to be the case. She is the one person Erik shows consideration for. She is perhaps his only friend outside of the Persian. Though in Madame Giry's case, his consideration toward her is based in compassion not a sense of obligation. Box Five is my way of explaining who this lady is, who else in the story she might be connected to and how her presence could have influenced events. It is told through her eyes and his. For inspiration I draw on multiple interpretations of Erik's character from Lon Chagney to Michael Crawford to Gerard Butler. But mostly he is what I imagined from when I first read The Phantom of the Opera and takes the approach of a man who is truly two halves of a whole.
