Why PluckYew!? There is a fairly common story about a battle in the old days where the French and English were at war. The french were said to want to catch the English archer and cut off their middle fingers so they could never shoot again. The English found out, surprised attacked them and won, the archers are said to have stood on the bank waving their middle fingers at the french saying, “Hey, we can still pluck yew!” You see old English bows were often made from Yew tree wood. This was supposedly the origin of flipping the bird / the giving middle finger. In time the phrase ;pluck yew' go degraded and pronounced with a F instead of a P. Of course the whole story is fake (sort of, the battle was real) but the rest is a cleaver urban legend of sorts. Hey, it sounds good, and most people prefer a story that sounds good over the boring truth, right?
Despite the obvious fictitious 'history' of the phrase 'pluck yew' or 'plucking yew', we do think that it is cleaver in a rough and tongue in cheek kind of way. There are several species of Yew trees in the world, nearly all parts of the English Yew is highly toxic!
We decided \Pluck Yew\ was a perfect name for our site. The spirit of which being a tongue in cheek, gritty perhaps sometimes dark humor. Our logo; a hand plucking a single twig of Yew, middle finger extended. Given the dangerous and amazing properties of the Yew we chose not to include any archery reference since the act of plucking the poisonous Yew is quite loaded in itself.
