Character Biographies: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

Name: Elliot Stabler, Nickname(s): El, Sex: Male, Age: 46 yrs. old, Married to: Kathy Stabler, Kids: Kathleen, Maureen, Elizabeth, Dickie, & Elliot Stabler, Status: Senior Detective, Hair: Brown, Eyes: Baby Blue, Actor: Christopher Meloni, Character Overview: Stabler is a Detective with Manhattan's 16th Precinct, also known as the Special Victims Unit, which investigates sex crimes. He is dedicated to his job, but this dedication occasionally turns into obsession, as he often takes cases personally, affecting his judgment; possibly a resemblance to popular Law & Order character Mike Logan, who also has given a similar force of nature to people who commit hate crimes. Nonetheless, Stabler has a 97 percent case closure rate, as revealed in season 8 episode, "Haystack." He lives in Glen Oaks, Queens (a section of the Floral Park neighborhood) with his family. His wife is named Kathy (played by Isabel Gillies); they have five children (Maureen, Kathleen, twins Elizabeth and Dickie, and Elliot). Even though he is a native of New York, he sometimes seen wearing a Boston Red Sox hat, suggesting that he is a fan. He is also a New York Giants fan since he is constantly seen wearing their hat. Partners: Olivia Benson: Stabler's partner is Olivia Benson, and while Stabler and Benson are good friends, they have never been romantically involved. Their relationship is not without friction, as the two sometimes argue over the cases they work on; Benson is quicker to side with the victims while Stabler is more impartial. This became obvious in the season 3 episode "Ridicule", where three women were charged with raping a male stripper; Benson and Alexandra Cabot (Stephanie March) are quick to come to the man's aid, while Stabler took a cynical view of his claim from the start. Benson and Stabler were separated at times during the show. She was briefly reassigned to Computer Crimes in the season 7 episode "Fat", and replaced by a Queens SVU detective, Lucius Blaine (Anthony Anderson). Benson returned to SVU in the next episode "Web". In the season 8 premiere "Informed", Benson teamed up with an FBI agent and eventually went undercover in Oregon to infiltrate an eco-terrorist group. While Stabler was still married, Kathy became jealous of Stabler's close relationship with Benson. Combined with his long hours on the job and away from home, Stabler's work at SVU placed considerable strain on their marriage, eventually culminating in their divorce; they later reconciled before it became final. They have recently welcomed the birth of their fifth child, Elliot (named in "Inconceivable"). Dani Beck: Stabler was assigned a temporary partner named Dani Beck, who remained until Benson returned full-time to SVU. After an altercation with a nearly mute homeless man, Benson re-entered Stabler's life as his partner. Upon their reunion, they both comment on how the other has changed since their original partnership. Beck had helped Stabler loosen up, while Benson had picked up a few health conscious habits from her stint infiltrating the eco-terrorists.

Name: Olivia Benson, Nickname(s): Liv, Livia, Sex: Female, Age: 44 yrs. old, Status: Senior Detective, Hair: Brown, Eyes: Brown, Actor: Mariska Hargitay, Character Overview: Benson works as a detective in the Special Victims Unit, which investigates sex crimes. As played by Hargitay (who has received a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for her portrayal), she is tough, empathetic, and completely dedicated to her job, to the point that she has no personal life of which to speak. This dedication, however, sometimes wreaks havoc on her emotional state: she empathizes with victims of sexual assault so much that, when an abuser evades justice or a victim suffers, she holds herself personally responsible. She has also occasionally let her compassion for victims of abuse cloud her professional judgment, an example being a case in the series premiere, "Payback," which she fights her boss, Capt. Don Cragen (Dann Florek), to get leniency for a woman who killed her rapist. Also, when investigating a case, she sometimes lacks the ability to be impartial, as evidenced in the Season 6 episode "Doubt." In the episode "Inconceivable", Olivia's desire for a child of her own is displayed, and also her disappointment and pain at being turned down from the adoption agency. Elliot's support for her wish is also made apparent. Relationships: Benson's empathy for victims has roots in her personal life; she was a child of her mother's rape. Her mother, Serena, was an abusive alcoholic. In "Taken," her mother died in a drunken stupor falling down a flight of subway stairs outside the entrance to "The Velvet Room"(a bar) before they could make peace, a source of great emotional pain. Conceived when her biological father raped her mother, she often worries that she inherited his genetic predisposition to violence and aggression. In the Season 1 episode "Wanderlust," Benson reveals that when she was 17 she lost her virginity she said that he was as old as she was since the episode was created in 1999 she was 31 at the time it was made which makes her lover 31 years old when she was 17, a fact she attributes to growing up without a father; in a later episode, "Intoxicated," she also mentioned being engaged for a short time to a 21-year-old student of her mother's when she was 16.She has a close friendship with her partner, Det. Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). Both Hargitay and Meloni have said that a romantic link between their characters would be detrimental to the core qualities of the show. Benson and Stabler's relationship is not without friction, however, as they frequently take different stances on cases they investigate; Benson is quicker to take the victim's side than Stabler is, and they periodically have intense arguments about how best to close cases. In the season nine episode "Paternity," Olivia and Elliot's pregnant wife, Kathy, are injured in a car accident on their way to Kathy's doctor appointment. Kathy goes into labor, and Olivia saves both Kathy and the baby.In the show's first season, Olivia has a brief affair with one of her SVU colleagues, Det. Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters). It is implied that she ends it in the episode "Disrobed" when he gets too close. Cassidy leaves the precinct at the end of the episode. While Benson has only been portrayed in relationships with men, executive producer and head writer Neal Baer has said that there is an unaddressed sexual tension between Benson and assistant district attorney Alexandra Cabot

Name: Odafin Tutola, Nickname(s): Fin, Sex: Male, Age: 49 yrs. old, Ex-Wife: Theresa Tutola, Kid: Ken Tutola, Status: Senior Dectective(Season 9)/Junior Detective(Seasons 2-8), Hair: Black, Eyes: Brown, Actor: Ice- T, Character Overview: A former Narcotics detective, Tutuola replaced Monique Jeffries after she left the SVU squad in 2000. He was then paired with Det. John Munch. While in the Narcotics division, Tutuola worked undercover regularly. He would often spend weeks or even months at a time in various alternate identities. He left Narcotics and transferred to SVU when his partner took a bullet that was meant for him. As of the season 8 episode "Screwed" he was assigned Chester Lake as his new partner. Tutuola initially had a rocky relationship with his colleagues in SVU, especially with Olivia Benson and John Munch, although that has changed in recent seasons. Unlike them, he saw the world in black and white, with all criminals equally deserving of prison regardless of any extenuating circumstances. He also kept a tight rein on his emotions, refusing to talk about his problems or to admit that the grisly nature of his work often affected him. For example, he and Munch had been partners for nearly a year before he opened up about his former partner's death. He never mentioned his son to Munch, only a passing reference to a lab technician in season 3. It wasn't until season 6 that his son made an appearance on the show, and their rocky relationship was revealed.

Name: John Munch, Sex: Male, Age: 55 yrs. old, Marriage: Divorced 4 Times, Family:Bernard(Brother), Andrew(Uncle), Lee(Cousin), Status: Senior Detective(Seasons 1-8), Sergeant(Season 9), Hair: Grey, Eyes: Brown, Actor: Richard Belzer, Character Overview: Munch first appeared as a central character in the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street, as a homicide detective in the Baltimore Police Department's fictionalized homicide unit, which debuted January 30, 1993. The character was based on real-life Jay Landsman, a central figure in David Simon's true-crime novel Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, a documentary account of the homicide unit's operation over one year.[2 Munch appeared as a regular character in every season, and in almost every episode, of Homicide. Munch's storyline also touched on the relationship between real-life Dets. Donald Worden and David Brown, where Worden was relentless in his tutelage/hazing of the younger detective but also genuinely wanted him to succeed and was impressed when the younger cop did excellent work (though he continued to rag on him, albeit at a much lower volume). A storyline in the book involving Brown cracking a very difficult hit-and-run homicide was included almost verbatim in the show's pilot. After Homicide: Life on the Street concluded its seventh season in May 1999, the character was transferred into the Law & Order universe as a regular character on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Both Homicide and the original Law & Order had crossed-over numerous times before, and Munch had featured centrally in each crossover). In the fictional universe, it was explained that Munch had retired from the Baltimore Police Department, took his pension, and moved to New York to join a sex crimes investigation unit. Although Munch was established as an interesting, three-dimensional central character in the ensemble Homicide: Life on the Street (in which he was depicted as a cynical conspiracy theorist), it has been argued that his move to SVU has stripped him of some of the character's defining characteristics; the size of his role has largely decreased over the years, eventually relegated from serving as an on-the-street information gatherer to a desk detective who mostly remains in the precinct. Despite this, he is occasionally involved in undercover operations. His main talent seems to be picking up on minutiae that no one else notices, and being more well versed in literature, politics, and popular culture than his fellow detectives. Det. Munch had worked for the Baltimore Police Department at least since 1989 (X-Files: "The Unusual Suspects") . In the Season 9 (SVU: "Alternate") Munch finds out he passes the sergeant's exam having taken it on a bar bet. In the past on Homicide: Life on the Street had attempted to take the sergeant's exam but 'comedy of errors' prevented from being promoted. He is temporarily promoted to commanding officer of the Unit following Cragen's temporary reassignment but is depicted as happily relinquishing control back to Cragen. However he has kept his rank, as he is still referred to as Sergeant in a future episode (SVU: "Savant").

Name: Casey Novak, Nickname(s): Case, Sex: Female, Age: 31 yrs. old, Status: Assistant District Attorney, Hair: Strawberry Blonde, Eyes: Green, Actor: Diane Neal, Character Overview: Novak is a young, tough, focused Senior Assistant District Attorney who, while sometimes deeply affected by the horrific situations she deals with on the job, does not often reveal her emotions. Novak can sometimes see the world in black and white and follows the law strictly without sympathy for the suspects and their situation, unless she is convinced otherwise by the detectives in SVU, or by extreme mitigating circumstances. Her idealism becomes especially clear in situations involving abuse of power. Although she quickly lost her innocence when dealing with sex crimes, she still shows uneasiness when dealing with the gray areas of human involvement, preferring the letter of the law to the messiness of each individual reality. Nonetheless, Novak has a 71 success rate in the cases she prosecutes, whereas the average for prosecutors is 44, as stated in season eight episode, "Haystack". The series has occasionally hinted that Novak is an environmentalist. She has been shown riding her bicycle to work (her opposing attorney comments how environmentally sound it is), and once jogged to Queens in order to meet Elliot Stabler to ask his advice on a case. The season 7 episode "Influence" revealed that, in her final year of law school, Novak was engaged to a man, Charlie, who suffered from schizophrenia. She ended the relationship when his symptoms became so severe she felt she could no longer be intimate with him. Later, in the season nine episode "Blinded", it is revealed that in 2002 Charlie attacked her in her home because of his schizophrenia. She convinced the police not to press charges but then ended the relationship. He eventually became homeless, and was found dead as a 'John Doe' in the spring of 2007 with only her business card on him. While she developed a deep compassion for the mentally ill afterward, she still feels guilty for not being able to help him, and partially blames herself for his death., As SVU Prosecutor: Novak prosecuted white collar crimes before being assigned full-time to the 16th Precinct (also known as the Sex Crimes unit) in 2003, after Alexandra Cabot transferred into the Witness Protection Program. Following her first case, Novak asked the District Attorney (DA), Arthur Branch (played by Fred Dalton Thompson), to reassign her because she felt she could not handle the intensity of prosecuting sex crimes, especially those committed against children. Branch refused, saying that he had been eyeing her for the job for some time, and thought she was a perfect choice for the position. She stayed on, and after four years in the position she has become more at ease, even as the acts of sexual abuse she sees daily still repulse her.Novak arrived on the scene with guns blazing, intent on leaving her mark on the bureau, and immediately approached detectives Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) by taking a hands-on approach, second-guessing their detective work and interfering with their interrogation of a suspect. It took a few months and a candid conversation with Capt. Don Cragen (Dann Florek) to understand the necessity of working as a team. Not until spring of 2004 did Novak connect on a personal/professional level with Detectives Benson, Stabler, and John Munch (Richard Belzer). By September 2004, her relationship with Stabler in particular had developed to a level of professional respect and friendship. Before, the detectives had made little or no contact with her, partially because they strongly respected Novak's predecessor, Alexandra Cabot. In May 2004, she went after Judge Oliver Taft (Tom Skerritt), when she became convinced that he was biased in the cases he presided over. Taft was eventually removed from his position after she proved he communicated ex parte with a wealthy woman accused of murdering her child, and had wrongfully convicted another, poorer woman of infanticide 10 years earlier.Like Cabot, Novak also became a crime victim while on the job. In early 2005, the brother of a Bosnian rape victim that Novak was helping assaulted her in her office, sneaking into Novak's office while Benson went down the street for coffee. Though not fatal, the attack was apparently meant as a form of honor killing because the sister, an undocumented immigrant, was required to disclose her rape in order to qualify for a "U visa" under the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. The brother, a fundamentalist Muslim, believed the assault was a disgrace upon his family. Novak helped the rape victim earn a permanent visa, but is forced off of the case by Arthur Branch in favor of Tracy Kibre (Bebe Neuwirth), who wins conviction of the rapist, Gabriel Duval (Alfred Molina).Novak has a mentor-student relationship with former judge Mary Conway Clark (Marlo Thomas), for whom she clerked for after law school. In "Poison", Novak helps Clark win freedom for the woman wrongly convicted of poisoning her daughter, and Novak and Clark then team up to remove Judge Taft from the bench. As was the case with Cabot, Novak has a snarkily adversarial relationship with her former supervisor, Elizabeth Donnelly (Judith Light), who has since been appointed a judge. Novak often finds herself at odds with Judge Donnelly, and in one case ("Rockabye"), Novak forces Donnelly (acting upon a directive from Arthur Branch) to recuse herself from a case. Occasionally, she finds herself opposing attorneys with whom she has worked before.Novak and Benson often share secrets that their colleagues are not aware of. Novak first told Benson in "Influence" of her failed engagement, and in the Season 6 episode "Intoxicated", Benson reveals to Novak that at age 16, she accepted a marriage proposal from a 21-year old senior at Siena College, where Benson's mother, Serena, was a professor. When Serena Benson, an alcoholic, discovered Olivia's affair with the older student, Serena flew into a drunken rage, and Olivia was forced to strike her mother to defend herself, similar to the incident that led Carrie Eldridge to kill her mother, Denise. In the Season 8 finale "Screwed", Novak fails to convict Darius Parker and is almost immediately summoned to Branch's office. However, she is allowed to stay. She will be working under new District Attorney Jack McCoy since Fred Thompson, who plays Branch, is departing the Law and Order franchise to campaign for the 2008 presidential nomination. In the episode "Impulsive", Novak assaults the manager of a halfway house medical facility after a 15 year old perpetrator is raped and the man did nothing to stop it. The manager also destroyed evidence by cleaning the room where the rape occurred. In the Season 9 episode "Blinded", Novak convinces Elliot Stabler to take the stand against the defendant who attacked him while being arrested and leaving Stabler temporarily blind. She blindsides him with hostile questioning, to prevent the state of Louisiana from extraditing the defendant (Louisiana, where the defendant also committed a similar crime, classifies child rape as a capital offense). When new DA Jack McCoy hears what she has done, he threatens not only to fire Casey if she ever does it again, but to have her disbarred.

Name: Alexandra Cabot, Nickname(s): Al, Alex, Sex: Female, Age: 33 yrs. old, Status: Assistant District Attorney, Hair: Blonde, Eyes: Blue, Actor: Stephanie March, Character Overview: Cabot first appears in the SVU episode "Wrong is Right", when she hired to work with SVU as their permanent ADA to oversee the legality of its arrests, following a rotating mix of ADAs (among them Abbie Carmichael of the original Law & Order). While she empathizes with the sexual assault victims she deals with, her strict code of legal ethics often forces her to make harsh decisions and judgments that go against her personal feelings. She does occasionally bend the rules to suit her own notions of the meaning of justice, however, often with unpleasant results. In the episode "Guilt", she lies to detectives about having a search warrant in order to convict a serial child molester, and aggressively pressures one of the molester's victims to testify against him. The victim later attempts suicide, leaving him with severe brain damage. She is let off with a one-month suspension, but never truly forgives herself. Departure: Cabot was taken out of the show in the episode "Loss", in which she was prosecuting a powerful drug dealer named Rafael Zapata Gaveria, one of Colombian drug lord Cesar Velez's top lieutenants. Zapata had brutally raped and murdered an undercover DEA agent. Cabot received a threat on her life, as well as that of her mother. Despite warnings from her colleagues, Cabot continues the case, unwilling to let Zapata scare her. A key witness is murdered in a car bombing right before Cabot's eyes. Cabot initially wants to try Zapata, even with no witness and her own life on the line, but after pressuring from the SVU detectives and District Attorney Arthur Branch (Fred Dalton Thompson) that her losing case wasn't worth dying for, she drops the charges. However, Zapata is immediately arrested by Federal Agents for the witness' murder. At the conclusion of the episode, she is gunned down in a drive-by shooting while saying good-night to SVU detectives Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Proclaimed dead in the newspapers, Cabot disappears into the Witness Protection Program, assuming the identity of an insurance agent named Emily in Wisconsin. She insists on telling Benson and Stabler the truth the night she leaves the city, however. She is replaced by Casey Novak (Diane Neal).

Name: George Huang, Sex: Male, Age: 47 yrs. old, Status: Psychologist, Hair: Black, Eyes: Brown, Actor: B.D. Wong, Character Overview: Huang is in introduced in the episode "Pique". He is both an FBI Agent and the resident psychiatrist for the Special Victims Unit team; basically, he provides them with expert analysis of crime scenes and suspects. His vast knowledge of forensic psychology and psychopathology lends him a preternatural ability to understand, empathize with, and predict the actions of suspects as well as victims. He also has extensive knowledge in the fields of theology, ethnic studies, and forensics.Despite a rocky start with the SVU detectives, they seem to have come to trust Huang implicitly. However, his opinion is not always appreciated; he sometimes agrees with the diagnoses of mental illness provided by defense attorneys and their psychiatrists, making it harder for the Assistant DAs who work with the precinct to prosecute criminals.Like the detectives, however, Huang has empathy first and foremost with victims of sexual assault, particularly children. He is usually very calm, soft-spoken, and even-tempered, except in one notable occasion (see below). As a psychiatrist, he sometimes offers his expertise to the detectives themselves, by helping them with any emotional problems they may have. One notable example is the Season 6 episode "Charisma". After the detectives see that several children have been murdered in a cult leader's home, Huang sits down with each of the detectives individually. In the episode "Execution", Huang is beaten by a serial killer while he and detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) try to get him to confess to a murder. In the 2003 episode "Coerced", he clashes with Stabler about the treatment of a suspect and says that he would testify on behalf of the defense. This is a very rare occasion in which he loses his soft-spoken demeanor.

Name: Melinda Warner, Sex: Female, Age: 48 yrs. old, Married to: Unknown, Status: Medical Examiner, Hair: Black, Eyes: Brown, Actor: Tamara Tunie, Character Overview: A medical examiner, Warner often works with Manhattan's 16th Precinct (a.k.a the sex crimes unit) by helping its detectives find scientific evidence to support their cases. She and her husband have one daughter in middle school, who was mentioned in the episode "Blast". She was a doctor in the United States Air Force, and served two tours of duty during the Gulf War before she began work as a medical examiner.Warner is known for her intelligence and has recently taken a more active role in the SVU team. In the season 7 episode, (SVU: "Blast"), Warner saves a man's life by performing an impromptu surgery on a man who had been shot by his own son. While Stabler might have been released by the gunman, Warner minutes later fires at the assailant, wounding him in the leg, thus preventing him from committing suicide by cop. The NYPD ESU team later apprehends him.She became a regular cast member in the 2005-2006 season, appearing in the credits. (She was a recurring character prior to that.) In the season 9 episode (SVU: "Harm") she is adamant that the doctor who caused the pain of an Iraqi while fighting in the Iraq war and who died state side because of it be brought up on charges. The doctor was subsequently suspended.

Name: Donald Cragen, Nickname(s): Don, Sex: Male, Age: 57 yrs. old, Married To: Marge Cragen (Deceased), Status: Captain, Hair: Bald, Eyes: Brown, SVU: In 1999, Cragen transferred out of the Anti-Corruption Task Force to a new bureau, called the "Special Victims Unit", which investigates sex crimes. The new job is a way to cope with Marge's death. Cragen is portrayed as a somewhat stern, but understanding, father figure to the detectives who work under him, although he had an early habit of haranguing them about the weaknesses of their investigations. He also maintained friendships with Logan (now a member of the Major Case Squad on Law & Order: Criminal Intent) and Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach), his former detectives from Homicide. In the season 5 episode (SVU: "Criminal"), a convict whom Cragen arrested in the early 1970s for murder is now out on parole and is, of all things, a criminology professor who is being framed for a crime. Cragen takes on the case personally only to discover that a man can change after 30 years of being locked up. In 2001, Cragen finds a kidnapped boy he and Greevey had been assigned to find in 1991 while investigating a corrupt adoption agency. Cragen and his detectives later determined that the wife of the boy's biological father killed his mother and gave the baby to the adoption agency, where he was given a home. In the end, the boy's biological father won custody of him. In the Season 9 opener he is forced to transfer to another department (the office of the Chief of Detectives) ceding control to the new Sgt. John Munch. He returns by the end of the episode.
