Stories are not just meant to tell a tale, but to share a lesson that we take with us for the rest of our lives.

1. Romance is an incredibly powerful and versatile subject for stories to be told. I am personally a huge fan of gender bender stories only if the switched gender offers a different potential storyline. An example of this is in Stuntikids where I made Megatron a femme instead of keeping him a mech. It offers a different side to the story of the relationship between Megatron and Optimus and making it far more personal. Also Wildrider is a femme because every good combiner team needs one.
2. Stories that have strong villains are better than ones with strong heroes. The strong hero always wins, no matter what thanks to plot armor. There is no suspense and no purpose other than to defeat the bad guy, and that is just boring. A strong villain is the one who makes the hero become who he or she is, and the heroes don't have to be strong to defeat them.
3. Bad guys often have better and often more tragic back stories than the good guys. They're also better written because they're supposed to be everything that the hero is against, but often the villain is just someone doing bad things because its all they know.
4. Revenge is a touchy subject. I personally don't believe in vengeance because it reduces you to someone lesser than what you could have been. You can fight and kill the bad guy to win and that's fine, but to sink lower than your enemy is to be something far worse. There is no gain and no more moral standing that the hero (or you) has after trying and forsaking everything just to get a shot at your hated enemy.
5. Redemption stories are my love. To have the villain overcome their darker desires and become someone better makes for a far greater theme rather than just killing them off. Even the worst of monsters can be turned to the tide of good and just. Just look at Paarthunax from Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Many people would spare him rather than kill him because he's such a great character.
6. Original Characters, in my opinion, must bring something new to the table of any story that they are in. Making them utterly overpowered with superpowers can work if it uses the logic and "science" behind the fictional universe. An example is Sprawl, my own original Transformer character. He's a planet-killing Warrior Elite and also an astronomer who genuinely believes in the Decepticon cause for the future of Cybertron. These are things that are canon in the Transformer universe. However if the character has a "dark past" and powers that are never explained which give him/her an unbeatable edge just makes the story boring. Look back at strong heroes. They always win. It gets redundant after a while.
7. Harems and harem stories are the poor man's version of a romance story. They're one of FanFiction's dumbest trends. "I don't know how to write romance so my hero gets all the babes!" We get it, you can't write a couple.
8. Godlike characters are also seriously lame. What's the point of the hero learning, enjoying or even doing anything if they're thrown into situations that they always win without struggle? Characters that are gods or goddesses in story aren't lame if they're written well enough.
9. Strive to bring something new to the table of any stuff that you write. It might not be the best story but it will provide a new window of opportunity.
10. Keep yourself calm and collected. Don't lose your cool.
