Bringing Kira down was the main objective. Putting aside hatred and differences is hard. Mello put them aside because he knew the world would be a better place without Kira. So if teaming up with Near meant getting rid of Kira, he'd do it. It wasn't for him, it was for everyone who was innocent.

A life is a life. No one has the right to end someone's life. Even if it was to make "utopia" (which is impossible).
