I am a big fan of Sci-fi and Fantasy based stories. I tend to enjoy stories containing pairings. I find stories without pairings of any kind lack in overall adventure. Amazing stories mix a little of everything, to create a truly enjoyable read.

Likes and Dislikes of Fanfiction

Perhaps one of my favorite aspects of fanfiction is when authors create completely original story lines in different universes (otherwise known as AU Alternate Universe). I also prefer when the protagonists are different from canon. They do not necessarily need to be drastically different, but a foolish, stupid, weak, Naruto/Harry Potter, who is the same as canon, holds no appeal. I read fanfiction for the creativity of the author, not to read a slightly modified published story.

Something else you get with fanfiction is the very unique pairings between characters. Many stories in the published world prefer very simple pairings with little imagination. Fanfiction has so much more creativity/variety, and I personally appreciate the effort authors put into their work.

Cross-overs in fanfiction can be quite enjoyable when done properly. The one aspect I can never quite figure out in both fanfiction and cross-overs, is the authors' need to reveal absolutely everything about the main character to everyone as soon as they meet. I can understand the need to eventually cover the "I am from an alternate universe or different timeline" aspect of the story. However, when an author simply reveals everything within the first chapter I tend to just drop said story. The authors who take the time to show, and carefully work in a reason for why information should be revealed. Are the truly skilled writers. At least in my own opinion.

From various readings I have truly come to hate the almighty "Author Power" as I like to call it. An example of this would be how some authors like to have friendly personalities in canon become instantly evil, with no reason as to why. I have no issue with altering characters, even making said characters evil, but I would like an explanation as to why they are evil.

When entire casts are changed from a good standing in canon to evil, simply because the author wills it to be, I find myself disappointed in the authors writing. When you work with any story, you have to shape the plot, fanfiction is significantly easier due to a canon version already existing. The fun comes from the authors imagination on how things can be altered, but when everything is changed with absolutely no reason given, it becomes "Author Power" which for me as a reader ruins the story.

I notice the massive amount of slash content on the fanfiction boards, and I must say it is kind of interesting to note that many of the authors of said content are female (or at least claim to be). I guess that is why you see so many harem based pairings by males too. I am personally amazed at how few male/female pairings there are in comparison to everything else. The only harem pairing that I have ever seen canon supporting is in the Sekirei series.

Recently I have grown weary of timelines, if you are adjusting a storyline, either do quick snapshots or keep your timeline within 2k words. Authors who take 10k words or several chapters of timelines, are rarely worth reading.
