Thomas had no memories or an idea on how Newt got his limp in the first place, but that was far from his mind when he found the boy leaned against a tree, badly hurt right next to that steep edge. It wasn't until after, he realized that wasn't the first time he'd seen Newt like that. (Two times Thomas saw Newt badly hurt and the one time he was able to be there with him.)

Newt rubs his hand over Thomas's back in a soothing gesture, murmuring into his ear. "I've got you, Greenie. I'm here. I'm still here. Just forget about it. I'm still here."

Sanity is a strange thing. One second, it's there. The next second, it's gone, like someone pinching out a flame.
